ACCOUNTING SUPERVISOR

Due to an upcoming retirement, we are recruiting for an Accounting Supervisor to join our team based in our Truro office.
Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accounting Supervisor is responsible for daily oversight of our three-person accounting team ensuring timely and accurate financial transactions and reporting. The Accounting Supervisor will support the Director of Finance with audit preparation and financial reporting, budget preparation, and Trust account management.
In addition to other relevant duties as assigned, the essential duties and responsibilities of the Accounting Supervisor include:
- Accounts Payable
- Invoice processing ensuring approvals
- Ensure accurate and timely payment of invoices
- Banking
- Daily reconciliation of all bank accounts
- Oversight of daily bank activity
- Monitor cash flow and produce daily cash reports
- Compliance
- Enforce controls established in respect of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Ensure accounting transactions comply with the Nova Scotia Barristers Society (NSBS) regulations, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), the firm's Privacy Policy, and all other legal and regulatory requirements
- Training
- Provide transfer of knowledge to stakeholders in their use of the firm's legal accounting software.
- Reporting
- Oversee timely production of financial reports required in the management of various law practices.
- Develop and maintain a documents system of accounting processes and financial controls.
- Prepare and review journal entries to ensure accuracy
- Ensure monthly reconciliation of all accounts with supporting documentation.
Preferred Candidate's Knowledge, Skills and Abilities include:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation or actively engaged in progress towards certification.
- At least five years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of software.
- Ability to explain financial information in understandable language to non-financial stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Reliable with a high level of professionalism and strong work ethic.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work in an environment of diverse personalities and competing priorities.
- Self-motivated team player who takes initiative to step outside of specific job responsibilities to contribute to the success of colleagues.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and to exercise discretion and good judgment.
- Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities ensuring deadlines are not compromised.
