Mainland NS Building Trades: Executive Director

Position Overview

The Mainland Nova Scotia Building Trades is a council of construction industry Trade Unions. Our affiliated Unions provide highly trained, safe working trade professionals to the Nova Scotia construction industry. Our mandate includes promoting and developing business for our 12,000 members and providing a united voice on issues affecting the professional trades.

The Executive Director of the Mainland Nova Scotia Building Trades Council is a pivotal leadership role responsible for supporting the 13 affiliated unions and guiding the organization towards its mission and goals. This role requires a dynamic leader capable of managing complex relationships with affiliated unions, government, industry and community partners while ensuring the Council's objectives are effectively communicated and advanced. The Executive Director also oversees the administration and supports the activities of the Building Trades Advancement College.

Key Competencies

Government Relations

  • Support the Council's government relations and advocacy priorities at the provincial level.
  • Monitor legislative, regulatory and policy developments that affect affiliated unions and provide timely updates and briefing materials to union leadership.
  • Maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies and other relevant stakeholders; represent the Council in consultations and meetings as directed by the Executive.

Industry and Labour Relations

  • Establish and nurture partnerships with government, industry leaders and key industry stakeholders, Indigenous leaders and leaders of underrepresented groups to promote the interests of Unionized labour.
  • Provide organizational leadership and foster inclusive working relationships among the Council, Executive and affiliated unions, promoting collaboration, transparency and accountability.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and developments that impact Unionized labour.
  • Collaborate with owners and employers to develop fair labour practices and policies.
  • Collaborate with Union leaders to address provincial workplace issues and improve labour conditions.
  • Coordinate collective bargaining efforts among the affiliated Unions.

Public Relations

  • Develop and oversee communication strategies for Construction Industry Trade Unions.
  • Coordinate public campaigns to raise awareness regarding Union initiatives and achievements.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the Unions, representing their positions and interests to the government, media, public, and other key industry stakeholders.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Leadership - Provide strong leadership on behalf of the Council and the 13 affiliated Unions, promoting a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability.
  • Prepare reports, recommendations, briefing materials to support Executive decision making; provide regular updates on operations, finances, relationships, communications and emerging issues.
  • Strategic planning - Develop and implement long-term strategic growth and success plans.
  • Budgeting - Oversee the Council's financial operations, including budgeting, and financial planning.
  • Administrative Oversight - Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Council and the Trades College, ensuring compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements, as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of all programs and activities.

Qualifications

All candidates must have proven leadership and strong communication skills. Knowledge of the Unionized construction industry is essential. The position requires an individual with energy, presence, integrity and the ability to seize opportunities and be a strong advocate for Unionized Labour.

Additional criteria that will be considered in the selection process includes:

  • A minimum of 10 years experience in a leadership role within a Union, government, or related organization.
  • Proven track record in government relations, labour relations, industry relations, and public relations.
  • Strong analytical and strategic abilities.
  • Experience in financial management and budgeting.
  • Post-secondary education in labour relations, business, or a related field.
