Geoscientist

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator (C-NLOER) invites applications for the full-time permanent position of Geoscientist to join a technical offshore Geoscience Team supporting the regulation of exploration and development activities in the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Area. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of offshore basin activities while working within a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment.

As part of a leading regulatory organization, the Geoscientist will play a key role in land tenure administration, regulatory operations related to exploration and resource management, and engagement with operators, stakeholders and internal teams. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of sedimentary geological processes with an overall focus on energy sector geophysical analysis.

Reporting to the Lead, Geoscience in the Offshore Resources and Data Department, this position supports geoscience projects and regulatory activities, and is responsible for the following:

• 2D/3D seismic interpretation using advanced interpretation workflows and attribute analysis to evaluate subsurface geology.
• Conduct integrated geological and geophysical assessments to support scheduled land tenure processes and exploration-related activities in the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Area.
• Reservoir modelling support for technical assessments.
• Participate in geoscientific studies and special projects related to petroleum exploration, development and renewable energy geosciences such as evaluating petroleum system elements and reservoir scale interpretation in the case of development projects.
• Participate in multidisciplinary evaluations and supporting oversight of regulatory approvals and authorizations alongside engineers and other geoscientists.
• Participate in the development and review of policies, guidelines, and regulatory instruments.
• Engage with operators and external stakeholders as part of regulatory activities.
• Other related duties assigned as required.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Geoscience, Earth Sciences, Geology, Geophysics, or a related discipline, along with a minimum of three years of relevant geoscience experience. Candidates must be eligible to apply for registration as a Professional Geoscientist with Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL). Current registration as a P. Geo. with PEGNL is preferred.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong capability in 2D and 3D seismic interpretation, sound knowledge of geological and geophysical interpretation principles and workflows, and the ability to apply technical analysis to offshore exploration, resource management, land tenure, and regulatory activities. Experience with Petrel or comparable geoscience interpretation software, including exposure to seismic interpretation workflows and reservoir structural and property modelling, is considered an asset.

The candidate will bring strong analytical, problem-solving, written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, internal stakeholders, operators, and external partners.

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator (C-NLOER) is the independent agency formerly known as the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB). It dates back to 1986, established by the federal and provincial governments under the Atlantic Accord Implementation Acts.
