The New Brunswick Legal Aid Services Commission (NBLASC) is seeking an individual to join the Public Trustee Services Branch in Fredericton as a Legal Assistant.

Public Trustee Services offer representation and decision-making supports to adults who are not able to make financial or personal care decisions for themselves. Public Trustee services also administer the estates of deceased and missing persons and protects the financial interests of children in certain matters. We take great pride in advocating for all our clients and always act in their best interest, by collaboratively working as a team and with stakeholders.

What you will do

Reporting to the Public Trustee, you will be responsible for a wide range of duties and will be privy to confidential information inherent to this position. Your duties will include:

  • Provide administrative support to lawyers;
  • Review, evaluate, and process applications and follow up with referring parties to ensure file completion;
  • Schedule appointments;
  • Create and maintain office files;
  • Locate next of kin and/or heirs of clients by using resources (Facebook, Ancestory.ca, vital statistics, etc.);
  • Contact next of kin and/or heirs and explain services, and answer any questions regarding services provided;
  • Locate and contact stakeholders where required;
  • Draft documents and correspondence;
  • Prepare pleadings in accordance with the Rules of Court;
  • Respond to general inquiries from the public;
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Who you are

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

Need to have (Essential qualifications and skills)

  • Completion of post-secondary training in a related discipline;
  • A minimum 5 years of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability.

Applicants must clearly demonstrate the essential qualifications to be given further consideration. Please ensure that preferred language for assessment is identified on your resume.

Nice to have (Asset qualifications):

  • Experience with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.), particularly Excel.

Wage

$2,008 - $2,439 biweekly - CUPE NBLASC Administrative Series Level II
