POSITION PHILOSOPHY
The Occupational Therapist is responsible for creating a human habitat and providing care and services to meet the needs of the elders in the cottages. The Occupational Therapist is committed to alleviating the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom through facilitating small, unexpected pleasures in the day-to-day life of the residents, and by surrendering institutional routines. The Occupational Therapist works cooperatively and respectfully with residents, coworkers, families, visitors, and volunteers to create a positive and pleasant environment in our community.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Occupational Therapist provides services and programs to residents and staff of, The Meadows Continuing Care Community in Lower Sackville, NS.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A knowledge of the psychological, social, cultural, spiritual and economic aspects of care of the elderly.
Show sound professional judgment and initiative based on training and experience in the field of occupational therapy.
To assess residents referred to occupational therapy for care and establish a treatment program and/ or recommendations.
To delegate components of treatment to the Occupational Therapy Assistant, as per professional guidelines
To maintain effective communication with the attending physician and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
To educate resident, family member and partners in care as applicable, regarding the condition and the Occupational Therapy intervention.
To maintain accurate treatment and progress notes and discharge summaries in accordance with professional standards of practice.
To comply with Rosecrest's policy on confidentiality.
To develop and maintain quality improvement statistics and indicators
Assist in preparation of operating and capital equipment budgets for the OT department.
To participate in and contribute to the clinical education of Occupational Therapy student, if required.
To assist in staff development by giving in services as requested by Director of Care or delegate.
To complete wheelchair and specialized seating assessments and communicate with funding stakeholders
To assist in recommending equipment that will assist with pressure management.
Networking with colleagues in the industry, professional agencies and other health professionals.
Standards/Scope of practice
The Occupational Therapist will comply with the Code of Ethics and practice guidelines as established by the College of Occupational Therapists of Nova Scotia. The Occupational Therapist will participate and initiate quality initiatives, have an understanding and respect for creating a culture of safety for all as well as knowing and respecting the Fire, Emergency and Security policies and procedures.
The OT will use a positive and respectful tone of voice when conversing with residents, families and staff. They will also be proficient in verbal, written and electronic forms of communication.
Maintains confidentiality of all personal and health information for staff and Residents of Rosecrest Communities.
The OT will attend and actively participate in educational and mandatory programs to increase personal knowledge and abilities.
Other related duties may be required to fulfill our commitment to providing a "human habitat".
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of a recognized school of Occupational Therapy and registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Nova Scotia.
Clinical experience with restorative care, geriatric and/ or long term preferred.
Must be able to carry out the physical demands of the position.
Hold current certification in CPR.
HOURS OF WORK
Rosecrest Communities provides service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hours of work will reflect operational requirements with the goal of providing safe Resident care.
Potential opportunity for 1 day a week to work from home.
