Who We Are

Imperial Oil Limited is one of Canada's largest corporations and has been a leading member of the Canadian petroleum industry for more than a century. The company's mission is to create value for its shareholders through the development and sale of hydrocarbon energy and related products.

Imperial Oil is Canada's largest fully integrated petroleum company and a major producer of crude oil and natural gas. It is also the largest refiner and marketer of petroleum products - sold primarily under the Esso brand name - with a coast-to-coast supply network. From the search for raw materials to the creation of highly specialized refined products, we are a leader in hydrocarbon research, development, production, manufacturing, distribution, marketing and retailing.

The resources division manages Imperial's natural-resource operations and is located in Calgary, Alta. It is a major developer of Canada's vast reserves of oil sands through its operation at Cold Lake, Alta., and its participation in Syncrude. In addition, Imperial is also well positioned to participate in some of the most promising developments in the Canadian petroleum industry such as: the East Coast offshore through Sable Project, and the Mackenzie Delta.

The products and chemicals division manages Imperial's petroleum products and chemicals businesses. The products segment operates four refineries located in Dartmouth, N.S., Nanticoke and Sarnia, Ont. and Edmonton, Alberta. This division has an extensive network of retail and wholesale outlets in every region of Canada. The chemicals segment operates a manufacturing facility in Sarnia, Ont., and a number of strategically located distribution centres across Canada. The division also operates two customer service and support centre located in Moncton, N.B and Saint John, N.B.

Research laboratories in Sarnia, Ont., and Calgary, Alta., concentrate on developing technology for Imperial's business and finding better ways to recover heavy oil.

Corporate priorities

Since 1992, Imperial's business plans and programs have been guided by four strategic priorities that are the most appropriate for the company in an evolving and unpredictable business environment. These priorities are aimed at improving the profitability of the company's operations and providing a sound basis for business growth by focusing on those aspects of the business that are within our control.

The four corporate priorities are:

Flawless execution
This means performing the day-to-day fundamentals of the business right the first time, every time. It means operating all company facilities safely and reliably without injury or incident, while maintaining the highest business standards.

Grow profitable sales volumes
This means increasing sales of higher-margin, higher-value products from the range of commodities and manufactured products Imperial offers to its customers -- focusing on those markets that offer the highest profit potential, while selectively withdrawing from marginal markets.

Best-in-class cost structure
This means having the lowest unit costs in every aspect of the business. It means being the best of any comparable operation, rather than among the best.

Improve the productivity of our asset mix
This means selectively investing in opportunities that provide high returns to the company and its shareholders, as well as divesting or closing non-core or under-performing operations and facilities. It also means improving the utilization of our current assets by developing our existing resource base, reducing downtime and using working capital efficiently.
