Dartmouth Refinery

Imperial Oil's Dartmouth refinery - the first in Atlantic Canada - was built to meet the urgent demands of the allied naval ships and Atlantic convoys in the First World War.

The refinery played an important part in supplying allied petroleum requirements in the last year of the First World War. Its capacity steadily increased in the years following and, at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, the Dartmouth refinery was again pressed into service to help fuel Britain's war machine.

Imperial totally modernized the Dartmouth refinery in 1956. In the late 1970s, the company embarked on a five-year, $90-million program to improve environmental protection, energy conservation and flexibility in crude oil processing at the refinery. Currently, the Dartmouth refinery has launched a two-year, multi-million dollar project to reduce sulphur in gasoline. As a result of the investment, Imperial intends to produce low-sulphur gasoline more than a year in advance of new federal regulations. Construction of the new processing unit is scheduled to begin in July 2002, with a target startup date of Fall 2003.

Today the Dartmouth refinery occupies 400 hectares of land - double its original size - and has a capacity of 86,000 barrels of oil a day. It is recognized as one of the more efficient refineries of its size in North America.

The Dartmouth Refinery employs about 200 people in various roles such as engineers, technologists, tradespeople and business support employees, making Imperial one of the largest private employers in Dartmouth. Overall, the refinery generates more than $20 million annually in salaries, benefits and taxes to the community.

But above all, it is through Imperial's skilled and dedicated employees that the residents of Dartmouth know the refinery as a good neighbor. Refinery employees are active in their community. They devote their energies to a variety of projects, volunteering as firefighters, youth leaders and speakers at community clubs and associations.

Believing that a good relationship between industry and community ensures a safe living and working environment, the Dartmouth refinery is proud of its role in the community and in the region.

Imperial has always believed in giving something back to the community in which it operates. The company prefers to purchase locally in support of its refinery operations and does so whenever reasonably possible. That commitment typically translates into purchases of about $30 million a year of local materials and services.

As well, Imperial is recognized as one of the most generous corporate donors in the region through its ongoing support of education, health, community services, sports and culture.
