Under the direction of the Senior Director of Student Services, the Indigenous Student Advisor is responsible for supporting and engaging Indigenous students at Saint Mary’s University. As the Indigenous Student Advisor, you will be empowered to develop programming and services for Indigenous students; make connections with other areas of the University to facilitate Indigenous students’ transition into University; and to develop culturally respectful programming to engage Indigenous students in university life throughout their university years.
The Indigenous Student Advisor duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Establish professional personal relationships with students to foster trust and understanding.
- Support students who are struggling with university transitional issues of coming to university.
- Identify, support and refer students who are in distress to resources on and off campus.
- Identify and assist students applying for various external funding opportunities and scholarships.
- Advise and support students in understanding and following University academic and non-academic policies.
- Plan, promote, implement and evaluate an Indigenous student orientation and welcoming program.
- Connect students to various services available at Saint Mary’s including, but not limited to, Counselling, Student Health Services, Fred Smithers Centre, Residence Life, Career Services, Academic Advisors, Service Centre, etc.
- Develop and promote ways in which Indigenous students can avail of the Co-Curricular Record.
- Continue to develop culturally reflective events such as Mawio’mis, graduation events for Indigenous students and other events and activities that recognize and celebrate Indigenous peoples.
- Develop an Elders Program for Indigenous students.
- Develop programming to allow Indigenous students to build a sense of community by facilitating events for students to get to know one another as well as faculty, staff and other non-Indigenous students.
- Develop peer support programming such as a peer mentorship program and coordinating peer-tutoring opportunities as appropriate. Such programming will involve promotion, screening, training and coordination of students participating in these programs as well as on-going assessment.
- Work collaboratively with the Admissions Office in promoting the Indigenous student experience at Saint Mary’s.
- Conduct frequent assessments of programming and events, as well as trend analysis and needs assessments. The position will be expected to create ample dialogue to ensure students feel their voices are heard.
- Develop programs and services in consultation with an Indigenous Student Services Advisory committee consisting of Indigenous student representation, faculty, staff and administration representatives, as well as external representatives connected to Indigenous culture, organizations, and relevant provincial bodies, as appropriate.
- Participate in committees and provincial/national initiatives that focus on the Indigenous student or topics that may be directly related to them such as outcomes stemming from the Truth and Reconciliation Committee.
- Through professional development and sitting on external committees, maintain a current understanding of best practices and trends in Indigenous student services provincially, nationally and internationally.
- Participate in the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) Indigenous related Learning Community to connect with peers at other institutions and continue to raise awareness of best practices and trends identified in Indigenous student services within the Canadian context.
- Present at conferences, sitting on external committees, and attending other events to represent Saint Mary’s University and build our profile on a local, provincial and national context.
- Identify and develop collaborative relationships with faculty and staff on campus who would be useful partners in supporting Indigenous students and who may have Indigenous cultural knowledge skills sets, academic areas of expertise and/or relevant services for which Indigenous students should be aware.
- Organize programs, sessions and events that will allow students to meet faculty and staff to build relationships with a goal of fostering opportunities for students to learn more about the services/opportunities available at Saint Mary’s.
- Engage faculty and relevant staff in training programs and initiatives developed by the Indigenous Student Advisor.
- Work collaboratively with the Saint Mary’s community, as appropriate, to find ways to better reflect the Indigenous cultures, both in our actions as well as through physical representation of Indigenous cultures on the campus.
- Identify external organizations and contacts that would be relevant supports and contacts for Indigenous students including, but not limited to, the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre in Halifax and other similar offices throughout the Maritimes, Band Councils, Provincial Committees focusing on Indigenous students, Provincial and National, and International Scholarship and Awards Programs and Elders.
- Establish clear lines of communication with First Nations communities and other Indigenous funding organizations to allow enhanced support to address funding challenges and questions experienced by Indigenous students.
- Work closely with the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre to offer programming, both on and off campus that would be of relevance and interest to Indigenous students.
To be the successful Indigenous Student Advisor you will have an Undergraduate Degree with a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of directly related experience, preferably at the post-secondary level working with Indigenous peoples or organizations. You further demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to participate in consultative decision-making. Strong organizational, event planning, presentation and facilitation skills combined with excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills will be required in this position. Skills in training and program evaluation along with excellent knowledge and ability in MS Office, Access, internet and e-mail applications and the ability to work evenings and weekends will round out your qualifications.
