Postdoctoral Fellow
School of Resource and Environmental Studies, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada

We seek a post-doc as the site-leader in a multi-disciplinary 3-year NSERC Strategic Partnership project to optimize greenhouse gas mitigation at Port Hawkesbury Paper (PHP), Nova Scotia. Principal research focus is use of waste-resources (heat and biomass) to underpin the development of an eco-industrial network that includes the development of commercially viable biomass fuel and an integrated poly-culture of vegetables, bivalve shellfish and warm-water finfish. Successful candidate will be the hub of a team based at Dalhousie University (Dal, Halifax and Truro) and Cape Breton University (CBU) and various First Nation communities

Activities can include:

  • Management of experimental activities and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate/technical students on-site at PHP
  • Coordinate research priorities and activities on behalf of off-site researchers
  • [Potentially] Participate in spawning and early rearing of stripped-bass at Truro
  • Oversee transportation logistics of live aquatic animals to and from PHP.
  • Support the PI as the interlocutor of the various research components for the duration of the project
  • Dissemination of research results to both scholarly and layperson communities.

Qualifications: PhD. Research experience intensive plant/animal production technologies particularly recirculation systems, nutrient recycling, heat transfer; preference will be given to those applicants with specific experience/expertise with land-based aquaculture and/or industrial-scale applications of industrial ecology and symbiosis.

Supervisory experience of research and/or technical personnel is a must but such experience needn’t be specific to an academic environment. Familiarity with the concepts of by-product valorization, life-cycle assessment, eco-industrial networks and/or industrial ecology is important.  International applicants are welcome; however, all applicants must keep in mind the immediacy of the start date.

Salary Range: $44K per annum for
Start Date: Mar-Apr 2017
Duration of appointment: Up to Dec 2019
