From Industry Expert to Instructor - Help Train the Next Generation of Skilled Trades Workers
Are you an experienced Power and Utility Line Worker looking for a new challenge; one that keeps you connected to the trade you love, while offering more balance, stability, and long-term security?
At Nova Scotia Community College, you can take the knowledge and experience you've built in industry and use it to mentor the next generation of skilled trades professionals, all while enjoying predictable hours, excellent benefits, and a career that's easier on the body.
Why Make the Move to Teaching?
- This is an opportunity to stay hands-on in the trade without the physical demands, long shifts, emergency callouts, or unpredictable schedules that often come with industry work.
- As a Faculty member with NSCC, you'll enjoy:
- The opportunity to share your industry expertise and help shape the next generation of skilled trades professionals
- Meaningful work that makes a lasting impact on students, industry, and communities
- A supportive team environment focused on collaboration, mentorship, and continuous learning
- The ability to stay connected to your trade while transitioning into teaching
- Predictable work hours that support work-life balance
- A stable and rewarding career in education with opportunities for professional growth
- Support and training to help transition successfully into teaching
Whether you're looking to slow down physically, spend more time with family, take your trade experience in a new direction, or transition into a rewarding second phase of your career, this role offers the chance to do all of that while remaining deeply connected to the trades community.
What You'll Be Doing
As part of the Institute of Skilled Trades faculty team in the Power and Utility Line Work program, you will:
- Deliver theoretical and hands on practical shop training along with classroom instruction
- Share real-life industry knowledge and troubleshooting experience
- Mentor and support students entering the trade
- Help students build the skills employers are looking for
- Promote and ensure health and safety practices and procedures are consistently followed in classrooms, shops, and labs.
- Work collaboratively with fellow instructors and industry partners
- Stay current with evolving technology and industry practices
- Participate in student advising, curriculum development, program promotion, committee work, and work placement support
What We're Looking For
We're seeking experienced tradespeople who are passionate about the industry and interested in helping others succeed.
Ideal candidates will have:
- Interprovincial Red Seal certification in Powerline Technician
- A minimum of five years (full-time equivalent) of recent journeyperson experience in the areas of construction and maintenance
- Safety training including WHMIS, OH&S, Fall Arrest and Confined Space
- Comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- A commitment to safety, mentorship, and lifelong learning
Previous teaching experience or related experience in the delivery of educational program or training adults would be an asset, but not required. If you've coached apprentices, trained coworkers, or shared your knowledge on the shop floor, you already have valuable experience to build on.
NOTE: Two years of your training will be counted towards the educational requirements and cannot be included as part of your occupational experience.
Compensation & Benefits
Faculty salaries currently range from approximately $78,771 to $104,267 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
In addition to salary, NSCC offers:
- A defined benefit pension plan to support long-term financial security
- Professional development and training opportunities to support ongoing learning and career growth
Make an Impact
The trades need experienced professionals willing to pass on their knowledge. This is your opportunity to shape the future of industry while building a healthier, more balanced future for yourself.
If you're ready to bring your trade experience into the classroom and help develop the next generation of technicians, we'd love to hear from you.
As a condition of employment, you are required to provide proof of a valid Red Seal certification, including your Red Seal number for verification with the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency, prior to your start date.
Candidates selected for interviews will be expected to provide at least three recent occupational references. The successful candidate will be expected to provide official transcripts to show proof of academic achievements.
NSCC is committed to the full inclusion of all applicants. As part of this commitment, NSCC will ensure that applicants are provided reasonable accommodations, as required.
