Job Description
What you can expect in a typical day
We are seeking a Process Safety Engineer to join our team at our refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick. In this position, you will be responsible for day-to-day technical support, long term planning initiatives and strategic projects support.

Your roles and responsibilities:
- Process Safety Management compliance to regulatory codes, standards and practices;
- Help identify and help manage risk for the refinery.
- Provide Technical input in support of the Management of Change process.
- Promote Process Safety Management throughout the refinery in the form of discussions, by sharing technical knowledge by presenting and supporting the Process Safety Training initiatives such as the Refinery PSM Academy.
- Provide expert guidance and assistance to design, construction, maintenance, technical and operations personnel on related process safety issues.
- Participate in, and facilitate, Hazard Identification (HAZID, HAZOP, What If, LOPA) and risk assessments.
- Develop, update and communicate PSM standards, instructions, codes and practices.
- Mentor and develop junior team members including engineers, technicians, operators, investigators and engineering students.
- Write reports and technical memos related to PSM issues, risk management and engineered solutions.
- Project manager of several process safety engineering projects including budget and scheduling management. Including oversight of outside projects supported by engineering consulting firms.
- Develop and provide Subject Matter Expertise for technical PSM elements such as; Overpressure Protection, Hazardous Scenario Consequence Modeling, Quantitative Risk Assessment, Facility Siting, Fire and Gas Protection, Risk Management, SIS.
- Project Management of PSM Engineering Studies such as Facility Siting studies, Safety Check Rate studies, Firewater Demand studies, and Quantitative Risk Analysis.
- Refinery on call for incident investigations and Process Safety Management.
Professional skills
- Excellent written and oral communication, organizational and planning, facilitation skills
- Ability to work across multiple levels and with various personnel to resolve and/or implement process safety requirements and risk mitigating initiatives
- Self motivated, safety minded and having a strong work ethic are key attributes
- Strong analytical skills.
- Experience dealing with multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail.
Education and experience
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in refinery or related industries.
- Experience with Process Safety Management is considered an asset. Overall experience can include areas such as: operations, maintenance, and plant engineering. Preferable process safety experience could include some areas such as safety program development, fire prevention, safety check rate studies, flare mitigation studies, facilities siting, consequence modeling and assessment, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, process safety management, process hazards analysis, incident investigation and the development and implementation of safe operations procedures and processes.
- A Bachelor of Science Engineering degree in one of the following engineering disciplines: chemical/process, fire protection, civil, mechanical, electrical or environmental.
- An M. Sc Degree in Process Safety, Safety Engineering or Fire Protection engineering would be an added advantage.
- TUV FS certification is desirable but not mandatory.
