The City of Winnipeg's Water and Waste Department is seeking a Senior Data Visualist to lead data visualization initiatives that support decision-making and business outcomes. This remote role will focus on delivering insightful, human-centered, interactive dashboards and visual narratives using tools like Tableau and Power BI. The ideal candidate will have a strong blend of analytical, storytelling, and technical skills in BI and data visualization, with a proven ability to influence business strategy through data.
Key ResponsibilitiesManage and execute large-scale data analysis and visualization projects across multiple initiatives.
Engage with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into impactful BI solutions.
Design and build interactive dashboards, visualizations, and reports using Tableau and Power BI aligned with brand standards.
Analyze and resolve complex business process challenges (minimum of 10 resolved within the last 3 years).
Communicate data insights through compelling narratives for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with privacy regulations (PHIPA, PIPEDA, HIPAA).
Conduct performance tuning, query plan analysis, and BI tool configuration.
Train and support internal teams on data visualization best practices.
Stay informed about emerging trends, including AI and machine learning.
5+ years as a Senior Data Visualist, Data Visualization Specialist, or similar role.
3+ years of experience crafting data stories and visual narratives.
5+ successful data visualization projects completed in the past 2 years.
5+ years of hands-on experience using Tableau and/or Power BI.
Resolved 10+ complex business problems through data in the past 3 years.
3+ years of experience applying human-centered design principles in data visualization.
Demonstrated leadership in 5+ cross-functional team projects over the past 2 years.
Strong communication and presentation skills (verbal and written).
3+ years of hands-on experience with SQL and database querying concepts.
2+ years of experience ensuring compliance with Canadian data privacy regulations (PHIPA, PIPEDA, HIPAA).
Passion for storytelling through data with the ability to drive business outcomes.
Evangelist for BI best practices and modern visualization techniques.
Ability to work independently in a remote, deadline-driven environment.
Adaptability to compressed timelines and shifting priorities.
A Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Winnipeg will be required upon selection.
The contractor must agree to the City's non-disclosure agreement.
The selected candidate must work remotely and be available during Winnipeg business hours (CDT).
The candidate must provide their own equipment and internet access.
