We're looking for a Mechanical Systems Engineer to support the development of mechanical designs and engineering systems across various products and programs within the organization.
As a member of this team, you will work collaboratively to develop high quality component, subsystem, and system designs capable of withstanding the harsh environmental conditions typical of military platforms.
You should possess a strong aptitude for problem-solving through the application of engineering principles in a multidisciplinary environment. A team oriented mindset and focus on achieving positive outcomes are essential.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support the full product design life cycle from requirements definition and concept development through to production ramp-up. This includes prototype procurement, assembly, design verification and qualification testing, and ongoing manufacturing support.
- Collaborate with Systems Engineers and Senior Mechanical Engineers to review, derive, and verify mechanical and environmental requirements from higher level system requirements.
- Translate requirements to designers and review designs/drawings to ensure compliance.
- Ensure your work adheres to integrated product design and specified requirements.
- Provide technical direction on the creation of mechanical concepts, designs, and drawings of electronic enclosures and other mechanical systems for rugged environments using tools such as 3D solid modeling and simulation software.
- Apply sound engineering principles to maintain high design quality.
- Work closely with other design professionals (e.g., PCB Designers, Hardware Engineers, Systems Engineers), Supply Chain Management, and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure a smooth project workflow.
- Deliver presentations at internal design reviews and other peer, management, or customer reviews.
- Perform environmental engineering tests—such as thermal cycling, vibration, and shock in the test lab for both qualification and design verification purposes.
- Support Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations.
- Provide technical assistance to Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), especially during the transition to production.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing to develop and refine Assembly Methods Instructions (AMIs).
- Review and approve Product Data Changes and the supporting justification data.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on design quality and efficiency.
- Mentor and review the work of junior designers.
- Stay informed on the latest technologies, products, and market trends relevant to your area of work.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Science, or a related technical field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical design or systems development.
- Experience with environmental testing (thermal, vibration, shock) and use of test equipment.
- Strong analytical skills in structural, dynamics and thermal analysis
- Working Knowledge in:
- finite element analysis tools and techniques
- Manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing and assembly
- company, military, and/or industrial engineering standards and procedures (e.g. MIL-STD-810)
- Engineering Development Framework (INCOSE System Engineering Principles)
It is a requirement that General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada be registered with the Canadian Controlled Goods program and that all of its workforce be security assessed.
