McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH), located on the McMaster University campus in Hamilton's beautiful Westdale neighbourhood, has been providing care to children from across the region since 1988. Here, patients ranging in age from infancy to 17 benefit from a family-centred approach that prioritizes the child's emotional, mental and physical well-being. The hospital is home to the fastest-growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, one of Canada's most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a range of programs and clinics with unique expertise in a number of areas including children's cancer, digestive diseases, and mental health.

The NICU at McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH) is the largest of its kind in Canada, providing tertiary-level specialized care to over 1,500 critically ill newborns per year and serving a broad geographic region in southern Ontario. The NICU supports a diverse and complex range of medical and surgical care needs for both inborn and out-born infants, working very closely with an active in-house obstetrical program that sees over 3,800 births per year and includes the provision of high-risk pregnancy care through the Maternal Fetal Medicine service. MCH NICU also operates a Neonatal Transport Team, supporting hospitals across southern Ontario and in collaboration with provincial partners. The large interdisciplinary NICU team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practices and continuous quality improvement. The NICU team is actively involved as leaders in a number of productive and impactful research activities and collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.

Position Summary

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a key clinical leader and critical member of a dynamic provider team in the NICU that includes Neonatologists, Neonatal Fellows and Physician Assistants. Providers work very closely and collaboratively with a large extended interdisciplinary care team to diagnose and treat all conditions affecting critically ill and convalescing newborns. In addition to direct clinical care, the NICU NP fulfills other domains of practice embedded in the role including education, research, quality improvement, and leadership - with a range of opportunities to become directly involved in each of these areas. The NICU NP is eligible for clinical cross-appointment with the Faculty of Nursing at McMaster University. The NICU NP orientation and training program is tailored to meet individual learning and development needs, taking into account prior experience and preparation. For Nurse Practitioners who are new to a tertiary level NICU, an internal NP residency training program is available to support individual learning, development, knowledge and skill acquisition; utilizing structured didactic and clinical education experiences to support development over a period of up to 12 months before transitioning to independent practice.

Qualifications

Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class

Advanced preparation at the Masters level with specialized training in neonatology or pediatrics

Current NRP certification

Current BCLS certification

Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in a Level III NICU preferred

Advanced knowledge of preterm and full-term infant pathophysiology

Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act

Knowledge of trauma-informed care and supporting families prenatally, during the birth process, and in crisis/stressful situations in a critical care setting

Strong critical analysis, problem-solving and assessment skills to formulate medical and nursing diagnoses

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with members of a diverse inter-professional healthcare team to provide and promote patient-centered care in a fast-paced, dynamic and clinically complex environment
