This role requires extensive travel in the Eastern Region with a company vehicle being provided. The Eastern Region includes all areas of Cape Breton Island.

As part of the Environmental Services team, the Environmental Scientist/Engineer is accountable for the provision of the Environmental Management System and environmental science expertise within the Eastern Region and across NSPI, including both existing operations and new projects. The Environmental Services team supports all environmental aspects of electricity generation across Nova Scotia Power, including generation and transmission & distribution. You will liaise with internal departments and external regulatory departments/agencies in providing this support.

You will also provide expertise and support on environmental science related to regulatory (environmental) approvals and monitoring programs.


Key elements of this role include:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting environmental monitoring, studies, and compliance programs at NSPI assets and facilities
  • Providing field expertise and emergency response related to oil and chemical releases and managing the remediation of impacted sites including customer interaction, scheduling and execution of work and regulatory engagement and reporting
  • Providing EMS guidance and support to the Eastern Region as it pertains to program execution and deliverables including regular meetings and updates, performance and compliance reviews, development and execution of environmental actions and reviews and updates to procedures
  • Supporting the environmental aspects of operations, construction, and maintenance activities; including the development and implementation of plans to mitigate and/or minimize the environmental effects of undertakings across NSPI
  • Supporting the environmental studies and regulatory approvals in relation to design, construction, and commissioning of new projects
  • Preparing and presenting environmental information for employee and/or contractor orientations and training relating to NSPI EMS, petroleum products and electrical equipment management, construction & maintenance activities, oil and chemical management and spill response, wildlife management and risk mitigation, waste management and other environmental programs
  • Assisting with the site supervision and auditing of contractor services to ensure compliance
  • Data collection, analysis and preparation of reports for regulatory departments/agencies in support of programs and activities across NSPI

  • You will have completed an Environmental Technologist, Bachelor of Science degree (preferably in Biology/Ecology) or a Bachelor of Engineering degree.
  • You will have a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience.
  • The requirements of the position are predominantly based in the eastern portion of the province and residency within this area is preferred.
  • Experience in some of the following areas is preferred:
    • Contaminated site management
    • Oil release response
    • Construction monitoring
    • Wetland identification
    • Watercourse alteration
    • Species at risk
    • Data analysis
    • Use of mapping tools (e.g. GPS/GIS), TDG and environmental legislation at provincial and federal levels
    • ISO 14001 environmental management systems and database management.
  • You possess a high level of professionalism, a strong work ethic, and demonstrated communication, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • You are a self-motivated team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks and make independent decisions in a timely manner.
  • The successful candidate will have the ability to report clearly on outcomes to all members of NSPI/Emera.
  • You hold a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License and are willing to travel within the Eastern Region.
