Job Description
What you can expect in a typical day
You will be part of the Instrumentation & Control Systems Engineering group, within the Irving Oil Engineering Services team. Our Engineering Services team works on many capital projects throughout the year for our refinery in Saint John, NB, as well as various Irving Oil terminals. You will typically work in an office environment, and occasionally visit plant sites as required to collect information and coordinate with construction teams. As part of the Control Systems Engineering group, you will have the opportunity to participate in design development - from initial concepts through to construction and commissioning.

Your roles and responsibilities:
  • Design instrumentation and control systems, safety instrumented systems, and machinery protection systems for capital & expense projects
  • Drafting of engineering drawings including loop diagrams, location plans, control panel layout and wiring schematics
  • Develop instrumentation specification datasheets and procurement documentation
  • Prepare engineering work order (EWO) packages for construction
  • Participate in design and safety reviews (P&ID and PHA reviews)
  • Develop Project Cost Estimates, including Material Take-Off (MTO) and Engineering Effort Hours
  • Technical and Quality checking of engineering drawings and documents
  • Participate in reviewing and developing templates, guidelines, and checklists
  • Frequent interaction with various Engineering disciplines within Engineering Services as well as construction, technical, and operations team members from operating facilities
  • Attend interdisciplinary and departmental meetings in place of the team lead as required
  • Navigate operating plant environments via ladders, platforms, and walkways to locate existing equipment and plan for new installations
  • Remain current on the latest technologies in instrumentation and control systems for process industry applications
  • Support construction teams by responding to technical questions, verify completion of construction activities on site

  • Able to perform work on schedule and within budget in a project-based environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Able to work collaboratively with others, ranging from tradespeople to senior management

  • Proficient with MS Office suite and with design software such as AutoCAD
  • Team player approach, including providing support to junior team members as needed
  • Able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards when working on-site

Travel
  • Minimal travel may be required for this role.

Education and experience
  • Post-secondary education in Engineering or Industrial Control Technology
  • 10+ years of experience in instrumentation & control systems engineering within oil refining industry
  • Experience with specifying instrumentation for use with DCS and PLC systems
  • Experience with Control, Pressure Safety, and Motor Operated Valve design
  • Experience with Pressure, Temperature, Level, Flow, and Analytical instrument design
  • Experience with Honeywell DCS is an asset
  • Experience with BMS design is an asset
  • CFSP designation, experience with SIL verification and SIF design in exSILentia is an asset
  • P. Tech designation an asset
