The Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy & Environment is a not-for-profit research and deployment center offering technology platforms for scale up to commercialization of clean technologies in a range of sectors of the bio-economy and renewables sectors. The company offers a range of service deliveries and collaborative engagement models for SME, large corps and all levels of Government.

Their team is based in Sydney, Nova Scotia and we are pleased to have partnered with them to bring an experienced and hands-on Director of Finance to their dynamic team. Financial management connects to every aspect of their organization and the Director of Finance will be the financial leader who will keep everything connected. The Director of Finance will keep the team focused and on track as they continue to grow. The Director of Finance will be vital to ensuring the team is prepared when new challenges arise, and unexpected crises hit. They will communicate clearly and consistently with the Board of Directors, the executive, staff, and other partners, and will build a modern, transparent business.

The Director of Finance will be responsible for a number of key financial functions including preparing financial statements and month end close documentation, effective and clear budgeting, stack funding management, cash management, internal controls, and payroll. The Director of Finance collaborates with organization leaders to collect data required for budgets, comparing actuals to planned costs to identify deviations and suggest corrective actions. It is essential the organization understands the real costs of their programs to make decisions on fundraising needs, contract terms, and program expansion or modification. They have many different types of funding which require different systems, structures, relationships, and communications. The Director of Finance will need to have strong financial literacy, be curious, and willing to ask questions.

Additional key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Reconciling bank accounts, confirming accurateness of bank transfers, ensuring revenue is deposited, outstanding cheques are reviewed;
  • Preparing and filing claims with funding partners, ensuring accurateness of invoicing and accounts receivable, reconciling profit and loss revenue with trial balance, reviewing deferred revenue to ensure allocation to related receivables;
  • Ensuring accuracy and completeness of employee payroll and benefits administration, accurateness of fringe benefits, allocating employee wages to projects;
  • Reviewing expenses to ensure correct allocation to GL account, reconciling capital asset schedule, Visa accounts, and prepaid expenses, and reviewing payables for accuracy. Ensuring billable expenses are captured in client invoicing;
  • Filing quarterly GST/HST returns for the organization;
  • Ad hoc duties when needed.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Solid experience in financial and month end reporting;
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics or related field;
  • Proficiency in financial software tools;
  • Motivation to reach expansion goals, develop better cashflow management and identify cost reductions;
  • A strong understanding of budgets and the ability to actively manage budgets, projections and interpret accounting data;
  • Solid understanding of financial statistics and accounting principles;
  • Working knowledge of all statutory legislation and regulations relating to finance and payroll;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, attention to detail;
  • Prior experience with QuickBooks would be considered an asset.
