Job Description
What you can expect in a typical day
As a Senior Process Engineer within Irving Oil's Engineering Services team, you will be supporting the largest oil refinery in Canada and our terminal network. You will work with a team of engineers, and cross-functional teams to investigate, design and execute capital and expense projects and optimize the process units within our operations. A major part of your role will be developing, analyzing, and interpreting process simulations. At times, you will also support the front end development stages (FEL 1 and 2).

Your Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Develop heat and material balances and process simulations, hydraulic calculations, preparation of equipment/ instrument datasheets and line lists, process design basis, management of PFDs and P&IDs, development of operating guidelines, etc.
  • Participate in PHA's & LOPA's.
  • Champion our process simulation strategy and associated business case in collaboration with Front End Engineering, Process Engineering, Refinery Technical Team, Process Safety Management and Project Execution Team.
  • Lead the effort at operationalizing and continuously improving the process simulation strategy.
  • Work with Engineering Services leadership and stakeholders to build the optimal level of internal capacity and capability with process simulations, backstopped by external providers.
  • Lead and / or actively participate in Front End Loading (FEL) 1 and FEL 2 project activities.
  • Lead and/or actively participate in benefits analyses and business case development.
  • Facilitate project work and studies with 3rd party consultants, technology licensors and engineering contractors. Direct, review and approve their work and deliverables.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring on process simulation to other process engineering and technical team members, in order to develop our capabilities.
  • Support operational troubleshooting and process optimization, as required.

Professional skills:
  • Understanding of the basic economic drivers of oil refining.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to make clear, effective presentations to communicate recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision / direction.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Attention to schedule and cost, and timely decision making.
  • Adept at coaching and mentoring technical staff at all levels on process simulation.
  • Very strong analytical and problem solving skills. You enjoy figuring out the root of problems and designing better processes and procedures to minimize or eliminate them.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience representing the interests of refinery owner/operators in capital project development would be an asset.
  • Leadership experience (informal or formal) would be an asset
  • Able to work in the field, including working in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and able to lift up to 20lbs. You must be comfortable with high elevation climbing, working at heights, and in enclosed spaces. You must be able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards.

  • Occasional Travel is a requirement for this role.

Education and experience:
  • University Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering with P.Eng. designation .
  • 15+ years of experience in refinery process engineering and process simulation development.
  • 5+ years of experience with developing Heat & Material Balances, PSV sizing in AspenHYSYS / EDR (or similar) and hydraulic studies with AFT Fathom / Arrow (or similar).
  • 5+ years of experience in Front End Engineering Design (FEED).
  • Experience with Unit Optimization, Two Phase modeling, Flare modeling, Surge Analysis and/or Dynamic Simulation with Aspen HYSYS (or similar) would be an asset.
  • Experience with PRO II, Petro-Sim, Salus, HTRI and MySep would be an asset.
