On behalf of our client, we are currently seeking a Category Manager, Packaging to join their team at one of their locations in either Lunenburg, Nova Scotia; Mississauga, Ontario; or Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Role Description

As the Category Manager, Packaging, you will take ownership of the entire packaging procurement function to ensure that appropriate consideration is given to areas such as cost effectiveness, efficiency, and quality and support High Liner on its journey of sustainability for the packaging category. You will be responsible to manage, motivate, and provide leadership to a team of procurement professionals and identify opportunities to continually develop the team's capability. You will play an integral role in any projects or initiatives that relate to packaging, requiring frequent coordination between engineering, marketing, and other stakeholders. Additionally, you will lead negotiation and manage strategic supplier relationships, ensuring that business needs are met.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop short-term and long-term category specific strategies for Corrugated, Cartons, Poly and related Packaging spend that align with the Company goals for reducing costs and meeting financial expectation, while managing supplier relationships.
  • Drive consolidation of spend and seek out synergies across Business Units where applicable, in consultation with stakeholders to develop alternative solutions, advising on options, risks, total cost of ownership, and business impacts.
  • Lead a highly productive team towards meeting organizational objectives while supporting their continued development.
  • Establish packaging supplier selection criteria, evaluate alternative suppliers, manage the RFx process, and drive final supplier selection in partnership with Packaging Engineering, FSQA, Marketing and other stakeholders.
  • Manage the full procurement lifecycle including contract negotiation, contract documentation and retention, and contractual dispute resolution
  • Manages supplier performance through monitoring conditions and key performance indicators, work closely with suppliers ensure standards are upheld
  • Influence and work collaboratively with engineering teams on new product launches - developing strategy and implementation, optimizing design/materials/process selection to drive lowest cost, industry leading quality, and continuity of predictable supply
  • Continually benchmark the packaging industry to monitor cost and technology trends and ensure best practices are incorporated into the High Liner Food's supply chain
  • Drive Early Supplier Involvement initiatives to ensure our packaging suppliers are proactively providing input into new product designs and future product roadmaps

Your Qualifications

As an experienced procurement professional, you have packaging category management experience that comes from the consumer packaged goods industry. You have demonstrated your ability to motivate and provide guidance to teams to support them in achieving their full potential. Your attention to detail and experience with contracts provides you with all the tools necessary to effectively negotiate with suppliers and find solutions that create a win-win for both parties. In addition, your superior communication skills have proven useful when generating buy-in and managing relationships, both with internal and external stakeholders.

Your qualifications include:

  • A minimum of 7 years of strategic sourcing experience
  • 5+ years Packaging Purchasing in Corrugated, Cartons, and Poly - CPG or food & beverage industry is preferred
  • Previous leadership experience within a related role or industry
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Package Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Finance required
  • Exposure to all or any of the following areas: SBS, Kraft paper material, offset printing, color management, packaging manufacturing process, molded tray material and process, molded tray tooling planning, tooling qualification, finished qualification
  • Strong financial acumen, previous experience in budget planning including Opex/Capex etc.
  • Expertise in the 7-step sourcing process, category management, strategic sourcing, tactical buying, procurement operations, contract management, risk management & supplier relationship management
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to elicit buy-in for data-based decisions
  • Progressive and innovative, ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Proven experience in managing overall costs, improving processes, and reducing supplier risk
  • Fundamental skills in MS Office
