The Marguerite Centre:

The Marguerite Centre provides a holistic, women centred approach to recovery from substance misuse and gambling addiction. We are an inclusive, safe, non-judgmental environment; free from discrimination and available regardless of economic status. We foster a healthier society by supporting women recovering from addiction through a long-term residential program focusing on the healing of mind, body and spirit.

The Role:

We are looking for a dedicated and passionate individual to work closely with the Executive Director, being the ying to her yang, in the daily operations of The Marguerite Centre. The Program Director will oversee the staff, ensure programming is of high quality, and be the primary contact for applicants who reach out for support.


Primary Duties:


  • Ensure that programs support both the philosophy and the mission statement of The Marguerite Centre.
  • Ensure the completion of evaluation and chart requirements and all relevant paperwork for residents in recovery.
  • Monitor and secure all case files for residents in accordance with the Resident File Policy
  • Supervise the staff communication and contact with outside agencies and health care professionals.
  • Inform and help develop program budgets.
  • Monitor and review program expenditures that have been approved by the Executive Director.
  • Assist the Executive Director in preparation of statistical, financial, and narrative reports to various levels of government and other funders.
  • Provide information to the Executive Director in support of the writing of funding and grant proposals.
  • Act as delegate in the absence of the Executive Director


  • Engage in recruitment, interviewing, and selecting employees with appropriate knowledge and skillsets for various positions.
  • Supervises all staff and is their primary management contact and mentor.
  • Supports the work of staff and conducts routine evaluations of their work.
  • Conduct formal performance appraisals for all staff on an annual or semi-annual basis.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and implement progressive discipline matters as they arise.
  • Creates and maintains the staffing work schedule.
  • Maintains a healthy roster of relief workers for the Centre.
  • Prepares the bi-weekly payroll submission to be given to the Executive Director for input.
  • Nurture an atmosphere of open communication among staff.


  • Act as the primary contact of all applicants and respond to applications within the determined acceptable time frame.
  • Conduct and oversee the evaluation and intake of potential residents.
  • Populate and maintain the wait list utilizing triage principles.
  • Maintain effective bed management, ensuring a minimum of 85% occupancy rate.
  • Look for opportunities to have "self pay" applicants on the wait list.
  • Act as the primary liaison with Correctional Services Canada to ensure that our contractual obligations are met, that their referrals are screened appropriately, and that their bed days are managed efficiently.


  • Research and explore new programs which may be beneficial to The Marguerite Centre.
  • Ensure that all programs are inclusive and culturally sensitive.
  • Complete evaluations of all programs and report conclusions with appropriate recommendations for action.
  • Ensure that all programs dealing with recovery are implemented and that residents can access both in-house and necessary community-based programming.
  • Arrange with community agencies for the delivery of workshops or topics relevant to the needs of the program participants.
  • Provide frontline support to the applicants and their families, if required. This includes conflict resolution.
  • Provides frontline support (including behaviour management) to residents.


  • Maintain the [email protected] email and act as the primary contact for information about The Marguerite Centre.
  • Chair regular staff meetings.
  • Is a member of the Occupational Health & Safety committee.
  • Attend Board of Directors meetings upon request.
  • Prepare inter-agency communications.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders in the community.
  • Keep abreast of current literature and innovations.
  • Monitor and oversee student placements.



  • 5 + years of supervisory and management experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in any Human Services field, or an equivalent combination of training and work experience (PLAR).
  • An understanding of the issues of substance abuse (including alcohol, gambling, and other process addictions), homelessness, and other social issues.
  • An exceptional knowledge of a women-centred approach to recovery programs including holistic alternative methodologies.
  • Demonstrated Human Resource experience that includes: understanding of NS Labour Standards Code, overseeing the work of others, payroll, scheduling, hiring, progressive discipline, termination.
  • A background in program implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability in conducting program evaluations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with appropriate computer software.


  • Certification in NVCI (non-violent crisis intervention).
  • First Aid and CPR certified.
  • ASIST training (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
