YMCA of Fredericton:

Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick, is situated in the west-central portion of the province and is one of the main urban centres in New Brunswick. The beautiful Saint John River bisects the city and provides the dominant natural feature for the municipality. The City boasts being the most heavily treed City in Canada and ranks consistently in the top 10 for being "one of the best places to live in Canada".

The YMCA of Fredericton is a charity that serves approximately 3,500 members through its vibrant health, fitness and membership programs that appeal to individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. The 60,000 square foot facility hosts a gymnasium, wellness centre, two pools, two studios, squash courts, child development centre and four multipurpose rooms. The YMCA of Fredericton develops people in spirit, mind and body through its programs and services in a variety of areas including childcare, after school care, employment counselling, global and community development, early years and youth programming, and health and fitness programming. The YMCA is proud of its role serving the Greater Fredericton Region for the past 163 years and remains a trusted and relevant partner to many community and government organizations in the area.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF ROLE:

The President & CEO must continue to execute the strategic plan for the Association and with Board and senior management team engagement, evolve that plan. A commitment to forging and sustaining community relationships is critical to achieve the growth objectives of the Association.

A skilled leader of people, the President & CEO has a track record of motivating and mobilizing teams to deliver against the objectives of the organization. The candidate will have excellent communication skills to work with both internal and external stakeholders successfully. Prior experience with volunteer boards, ideally in the charitable sector will be important.

A dedicated driver of operational excellence, the candidate will embody creative and innovative approaches to delivering excellence both in quality and service.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a candidate with progressively senior leadership experience or other CEO experience of a YMCA, a medium sized private company or a complex not for profit or public agency. A track record of accountability and results in the following areas will be important:

  • Demonstrated accountability for leading diverse operations including facility operations and maintenance and managing a budget in the millions of dollars.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning, philanthropy, fund-raising and volunteer engagement and development. Experience with cause driven marketing would be an asset. 
  • Experience collaborating and partnering with the government, not-for-profit and private sectors with a focus on community impact.
  • Capability to attract, develop, engage and retain a high performing senior management team.
  • Strong governance policy experience with a clear understanding of Board policy and strategic roles as distinct from operational accountabilities.
  • Record of valuing community service and demonstrated community leadership.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong knowledge of the YMCA programs and services, a reasonable knowledge of the charitable not-for-profit sector including government grant processes and ideally knowledge of the Fredericton community.
  • Post-Secondary education in a related field considered to be an asset.
  • Bilingual (English & French) considered an asset.

Business Orientation: Demonstrates business acumen and understands how to balance the social objectives of the Association, with the need to run a business to meet or exceed financial and operational targets. Has a keen sense of how to proactively identify, pursue and deliver growth for the Association. Is passionate about delivering a consistent and exceptional member experience and takes pride in the efficient and effective running of the organization.

Strategic Orientation: Is forward thinking and demonstrates an in-depth understanding of internal and external issues, challenges, processes and outcomes as they impact the YMCA's stakeholders and the communities served by the YMCA, as well as the strategic direction of the YMCA. Leads, contributes to, or supports the development and the implementation of the strategic direction of the organization.

Creativity & Innovation: Always in search of opportunities to improve by continuous learning, soliciting insights, perspectives and new ideas. Has a pulse on what is happening in the changing environment and leverages ideas and information to design and implement practical, relevant and creative strategies.

Alignment to YMCA Values: Demonstrates in word and action the YMCA's core values in all matters at all times. Integrates YMCA values into all aspects of the YMCA.

Risk Management: Identifies, assesses and manages risk while striving to attain organizational objectives. Balances risk with opportunity, within the principles of the YMCA, to achieve strategic goals.
