Occupational Hygienist

WorkSafeNB is seeking an Occupational Hygienist. Reporting to the Team Lead, Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics, you will improve the health and safety in workplaces by identifying the environmental factors or stressors that may result in injury, illness, impairment, or affect the well-being of workers. You will achieve this by working with employers and employees in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of physical, chemical and biological agents, ergonomic, and psychosocial stressors in the workplace. The successful candidate will work primarily with employers and employees in the Bathurst-Campbellton region, therefore there is a preference for the successful candidate to work from home in the Northeast region of New Brunswick. Travel to other regions of the province may be required.

Your key areas of responsibility include:

  • Promoting safe and healthy workplaces across the province through workplace inspections and the enforcement of the New Brunswick Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations
  • Investigating complaints, work refusals and incidents/exposures
  • Conducting sampling and analysis of workplace contaminants and associated worker exposures, to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and, Safety Act and Regulations and applicable standards

You, as a successful candidate, possess:

  • Certification as a Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) or equivalent.
  • Or possess a combination of academic qualification and professional experience meeting the eligibility requirements and be willing to become certified within five years.
  • Knowledge and understanding of court proceedings and process would be considered an asset.

Written and spoken competency in English and in French is required.

About WorkSafeNB

Organization

WorkSafeNB administers no-fault workplace accident and disability insurance for employers and their workers, funded solely through assessments on employers. All employers having three or more workers are obligated to obtain compensation coverage.

WorkSafeNB is committed to preventing workplace injuries and illness through education and enforcement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

WorkSafeNB is administered by a board of directors consisting of the chairperson, a vice-chairperson, the president and CEO (non-voting member), the chairperson of the Appeals Tribunal (non-voting member), five members representing workers, and five members representing employers. Other than the president & CEO and the chairperson of the Appeals Tribunal, members of the board of directors serve part-time.

  • Provide timely compensation benefits, medical aid, rehabilitation, and safe return-to-work services to injured workers.
  • Provide sustainable insurance and insurance-related services to the employer community.
  • Represent stakeholders and provide recommendations and advice to government with respect to legislation, and publish such reports, studies, and recommendations WorkSafeNB considers advisable.

Assessments are affected by the level of activities in the province's workplaces, as are the resulting claims. There are also substantial assets that ensure WorkSafeNB will be able to provide the ongoing benefits promised to injured workers through a wage loss recovery insurance system. These funds are invested in the financial markets and investment returns are subject to the ups and downs of the marketplace.

WorkSafeNB's head office is located in Saint John. The WorkSafeNB Rehabilitation Centre is located in Grand Bay-Westfield. We also have offices in Grand Falls and Dieppe.
