Cultivation Technician

We are currently looking for a Cultivation Technician based in Cornwallis, NS. This is a one year term position and the successful candidate must qualify under the IRAP Youth Employment Program (NRC IRAP funding to hire young graduates (canada.ca))

Key Responsibilities

The Cultivation Technician will assist in the daily care, maintenance and experimental production of a number of cultivated seaweed species, mainly at the James Craigie Research Center in Cornwallis. Some pond maintenance work may also be required periodically in Charlesville, as needed. The individual will be expected to complete a variety of tasks in a timely manner, and must be meticulous, able to follow standard 'clean' laboratory procedures to prevent culture contamination and be competent at keeping records and be well organized.

The Requirements

In addition to meeting the requirements under the IRAP Youth Employment Program, the successful candidate will have:

  • B.Sc. in Biology, Plant Science, Aquaculture, Agriculture or equivalent.
  • Experience in the production and/or care of aquatic or terrestrial organisms is essential
  • Experience and training in lab techniques and procedures is highly desirable
  • Computer skills, including data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, statistical program, and experience with graphing software are also desirable
  • Must be flexible, adaptable and versatile with a willingness to tackle anything
  • Effective observational skills and good time management skills are important as is the ability work independently or as part of a team.
