Senior Test and Trials Specialist

Since 2012, we have invested more than $400 million in facilities, people, processes, and technology, making Halifax Shipyard one of the most modern and capable shipyards in North America. Over the next 30 years our shipbuilders will construct 20 modern patrol ships and surface combatants for the Royal Canadian Navy as part of Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy, the largest defence procurement in Canadian history. This year, we delivered the lead Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship, the largest Navy ship built in Canada in 50 years a nd we're just getting started. The second ship will be delivered in 2021.

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is seeking a Senior Test and Trials Specialist. This is a permanent, full-time role based in Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. The primary language of work is English.
Key Responsibilities
  • Work closely with Production and Quality Control to ensure efficient handover of systems and equipment from Production to Test and Trials to enable system Set to Work / Commissioning.
  • Work as part of the Test & Trials team to commission systems and equipment and demonstrate compliance with Classification Society and Customer requirements including:
  • Develop Set to Work/Testing/Trials procedures/agenda and directly communicating with customer and classification society to receive approval for agenda;
  • Operate ship systems and execution of test procedures and trial agendas, both ashore and at sea (must be able to go to sea in support of sea trials);
  • Coordinate cross-functional task completion in support of commission, trials, and operation of equipment and systems in assigned Area of Responsibility., e.g,. sensors, electrical components, and interfacing mechanical systems;
  • Present and conduct trials in the presence of customer and classification society;
  • Report test and trial agenda results to demonstrate that requirements have been met;
  • Develop and manage detailed test & trial schedules for assigned area of responsibility;
  • Coordinate setting of conditions necessary to support third-party / Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) conduct of trials & provide liaison support for their trials;
  • Manage compliance with Lock-out/Tag-out/Permit systems' requirements on equipment and systems in assigned Area of Responsibility;
  • Coordinate with calibration Manager to ensure complete calibration on assigned equipment and systems;
  • Manage and coordinate completion of Preventive Maintenance on equipment and systems in assigned Area of Responsibility.

  • Education Required: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering as well as a Professional Engineering (P. Eng) designation or equivalent relevant technologist diploma (eg: Marine, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering). A Transport Canada certification as First or Second Class Marine Engineer would be considered an asset.
  • Years of Experience Required:
    • 8 or more years' experience in one or more of the following areas:
      • Seagoing Naval engineering
      • Commissioning and troubleshooting of new build vessels in a commercial shipyard
      • Commissioning and troubleshooting of high tech systems in process or power plants
      • Design of state of the art new build ships or marine structures
  • Experience in the design and/or operation of shipboard combat/weapons/communications systems
  • Strong knowledge and experience with shipboard electronic and electrical equipment and systems
  • Ability to read and understand cable and wiring diagrams and component/equipment technical manuals
  • Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Willingness to work extended/flexible hours
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word and Excel)
