What you can expect in a typical day
As we expand and grow our engineering team in Saint John, NB, we are looking for a Control Systems Group Leader to join our Engineer Services team. This team is responsible for all engineering services required for the approximately 200 projects that are undertaken each year at our refinery in Saint John, NB, as well as land and marine terminals. As the Control Systems Group Leader, you will be accountable for providing leadership to a team of 6-8 Control Systems Engineers and Engineering Designers, provide oversight on projects, and technical support to ensure we are maintaining and evolving safe, reliable, and efficient operations. These positions require that you spend time in the field, so you must be willing and able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Responsibilities - People Leadership
  • Coach and mentor a team of engineers and engineering designers by working closely with them to implement SMART goals in line with overall goals and standards for the organization.
  • Demonstrate collaborative leadership and have an infectious enthusiasm for excellence.
  • Work with individual team members on career development and training.
  • Develop training requirements and succession planning for the team.
  • Work with individuals on performance management documents; creation, managing, and closing out various people processes throughout the year.

Responsibilities - Control Systems
  • Assess risks of various processes and projects; actively mitigate risk elements for both people and equipment
  • Support the development, review, and approval of Control Systems / Instrumentation specifications, Scopes of Work (SOWs), non-standard and standard designs, design logic, design drawings, Engineering Work Orders, control panel requirements, display design, system map layouts, sequence of operations etc. for a heavy industrial environment.
  • Provide field engineering support including: responding to RFI's (request for information) from various construction teams and commissioning support.
  • Conduct RCA (root cause analysis) and implement solutions on complex issues.
  • In conjunction with your leader and peers, set priorities, allocate resources, adhere to project schedules, develop plans and policies.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance within various jurisdictions.
  • Responsible for understanding and creating plans to mitigate short and medium term risks.
  • Act as a subject matter expert resource for medium and long term plans.
  • Act as a technical resource on complex matters affecting operations.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot including Group Leaders for other engineering disciplines.

What you'll need to succeed
  • Strong technical proficiency with control systems and instrumentation including Distributed Control System (DCS), Programmable Automation Controllers (PAC), and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
  • Strong knowledge of systems architecture including control panels and circuit design.
  • Strong understanding of financials and how decisions impact budgets.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to adjust communication style.
  • Strong collaboration and team work skills.
  • Able to adjust quickly to changing priorities.
  • Proficient with MS Office: Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint.
  • Experience with AutoCAD is an asset.
  • At times you will be required to be in the field so you must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and climb heights, while wearing all required PPE.

Travel
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Education and experience
  • Degree or diploma in a field related to Control Systems Engineering.
  • Knowledge of complex engineering concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a heavy, industrial environment, refining and terminal operations preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a management position leading people.
  • P.Eng. designation is a definite asset.
