The focus within the group is to conduct Hazardous Building Material surveys. Hazardous building materials typically include asbestos, lead, mercury, PCBs, silica, mould and ozone depleting substances. They need to be able to identify materials within a building that are suspected to contain these hazards, sample as appropriate, collect data on condition, quantity, location etc. A stronger background on building construction is an asset, but not required. There are different type of surveys - sometime we will do full building or only partial sections. The survey could be non-destructive in occupied areas, or quite destructive if the building is being demolished - to the extent that we are cutting holes in walls or floors to look for hidden materials.
    Abatement/remediation
Often if the material identified in the survey is in poor shape or will be disturbed by demolition or renovation, will it need to be removed. The candidate is not doing the actual removal, but would be providing project management oversight on worker procedures, air sampling and general inspection on the work for scope and safety compliance.
Work occurs in both provincial and federal sites so often the survey approach and regulatory requirement will be different. Preferably the candidate should be familiar with both sets of regulations, but not required.
    Health & Safety/ IEQ
IEQ would involve more office type setting checking for carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, particulate etc. Worker exposure would be more industrial with workers exposed to various chemicals, noise etc. The main focus would be on the HAZ side.
