Associate Principal Scientist

The Associate Principal Scientist identifies, evaluates, develops, aligns and transfers Technology and Best Practices on all aspects of Potato Storage. This includes making recommendations on the best storage designs for each region, storage management for all McCain owned- or rented storages, and guidance to McCain storage managers and McCain growers on storages and storage management. The objective is to help all potato storage operators deliver potatoes out of storage to McCain factories, with minimal loss of weight and quality at minimum cost and risk. The Associate Principal Scientist is also responsible for conducting Agronomy Information Management & Reporting.
Key Accountabilities

  • Work with global McCain potato storage managers to help them achieve maximum quality and minimum shrink of potatoes out of storage at minimum cost & risk. Call storage managers every 6-8 weeks for updates and prepare report.
  • Prepare and maintain global specifications for potato storages, and provide guidance on storage construction and management to all regional Agriculture Leaders and their Storage Managers.
  • Track and record potato storage shrink in all McCain-owned or rented potato storages.
  • Provide recommendations to improve storage performance, and work with regions as appropriate to minimize storage losses.
  • Conduct relevant research on intellectually and economically important potato storage issues.
  • Network and learn from storage experts and take action to stay abreast of latest storage technologies, to be able to provide guidance and recommendations to all functions.
  • Keep McCain Management and Agriculture abreast of the latest developments in all aspects of potato storage and make recommendations for action where required.
  • Develop and deliver potato storage knowledge through written materials and live or recorded training sessions and to maintain and develop existing tracking and information programs: AGnet, Storage shrink and global McCain storage capacities, CIPC use, Pesticide A.I., Irrigation water use, Carbon Footprint.

  • Qualifications
  • Master's in Agriculture or Plant Science (specialization in Postharvest Physiology or storage of fruits and vegetables is a nice to have).
  • 3 - 5 years' Experience as a manager or trainer of potato storage operations, in a research or commercial capacity is desirable. Training and job experience in potato storage and postharvest physiology highly desirable.
  • Research Experience in Potato Storage Science is a nice to have.
  • Agronomist Professional accreditation.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, influencing skills and an ability to work in a matrix organization.
