The Department of Energy and Resource Development is seeking an individual to join the Forest Operations and Development Branch as Manager of Forest Operations, in Fredericton.

As process owner of the Forest Operations Program and reporting to the Branch Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Providing leadership to Operations Section staff, including developing workplans, managing performance and supporting developmental opportunities;
  • Advising the Director and Senior Management on Crown forestry oversight and Crown Timber Licensee evaluation including third party certification and recommending appropriate policy direction or actions;
  • Coordinating periodic Licensee performance evaluation;
  • Establishing appropriate measures and metrics to ensure key responsibility areas for staff are identified, targets are set and results are tracked so that the program outcomes are clearly understood and articulated;
  • Investigating alternatives and improvements to processes and programs to increase effectiveness and efficiencies within the Section and the Department;
  • Maintaining close liaison with Licensee representatives and working collaboratively to address the needs of the Department, stakeholders, rights holders and clients;
  • Coordinating responses to inquiries related to Crown forestry operations;
  • Presenting related business, scientific, economic or technical information to various audiences, ranging from general public to professionals experienced in the subject matter;
  • Managing Section budget, tracking section expenditures, and exploring opportunities for continual improvement and efficiencies;
  • Supporting the Director and Senior Management by participating on committees and projects related to Crown Forest Management;
  • Performing other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree in Forestry or Forest Engineering; and a minimum of six (6) years of experience in forest management activities, including a minimum of three (3) years of experience in forest operations. A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience is required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Forester in New Brunswick is also required.

ASSET QUALIFICATION(S): Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in the following: third party certification processes; environmental management systems; operational planning, harvesting, road and silviculture operations; policy development; leading change through process improvement. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel occasionally within the Province when necessary; obtain and maintain registration as a professional Forester in New Brunswick.

SALARY:  $64,350 to $85,644 per annum
