Chief Aquaculture Veterinarian

The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is seeking an individual to join the Aquaculture and Fisheries Branch, as Chief Aquaculture Veterinarian, in Shippagan or Bouctouche.

As a member of the fish health team and reporting to the Provincial Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of both freshwater and shellfish health programs to the aquaculture industry in the Southeast and Northeast areas of New Brunswick. Activities will be directed toward the implementation and supervision of the Department's fish and shellfish health management programs, specifically in the areas of disease prevention, surveillance and control. The successful candidate will work with a team of Biologists and Veterinarians in the delivery of these programs.

Responsibilities will include the following: providing leadership to section staff, including managing performance, developing work plans and supporting developmental opportunities; fish and shellfish monitoring and surveilance; site, vessel and facility biosecurity audits; fish and shellfish health support for new species; chairing the Shellfish Health Technical Committee; liaising with industry members and other stakeholder groups with regard to fish and shellfish health matters; high level communication and interaction with industry, provincial and federal governments, private Veterinarians, and stakeholders; and performing other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from a recognized school of veterinary medicine;
  • Successful completion of post-graduate training (i.e. M.Sc., Ph.D., DVSc.) in anatomic veterinary pathology;
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of related veterinary experience;
  • A license to practice Veterinary Medicine in a Canadian province or territory;

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Registration, or eligibility for registration, with the New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association, is required.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in disease control programs, fish health management and aquaculture. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel throughout the region as required; work extended hours, evenings and weekends, and respond to emergency situations, on occasion; maintain membership in the New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association.

SALARY: $77,070 to $100,514 per annum

NOTE: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.
