The Nunavut Building Code Act (BCA), Fire Safety Act (FSA) and Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA) - the "safety codes" - exist to create a system that provides a safe physical environment for Nunavummiut to live and work. The Acts establish the responsibility of the Minister to coordinate and encourage the safe management of everything to which the Acts and their respective Regulations apply.

Based in Iqaluit, NU, and reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Infrastructure, you will provide direction and leadership regarding the oversight and administration of BCA, FSA and TSSA, and their respective Regulations. Buildings covered by the safety codes include those used for assembly, institutional, residential, commercial, mercantile and industrial occupancy, and range from simple to complex in size and design. As Director of Safety Services, you will play a key leadership role in the effective application of these codes for the benefit of everyone in Nunavut.

Your profile as a qualified Director, Safety Services will include the following highlights:

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of professional experience in the field, including the application of safety codes and standards, including five (5) years in a management capacity.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.

ASSETS:

  • The ability to speak Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun.
  • Knowledge of the Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit.
  • Certification as a "Safety Codes Officer".

NOTE: This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

Compensation & benefits: This position is not included in the Nunavut Employees Union and offers a salary ranging from $114,358 to $163,368 per annum (for 37.5 hours/week), plus a Northern Allowance of $15,016 per annum. Note: Subsidized staff housing is available.
