Overview

Working under the direction of the Settlement Manager, the Cross-Cultural Facilitator works as part of a team of MAGMA facilitators who reach out to the community in a variety of areas to provide cross-cultural training.

This Facilitator's primary focus is to create a local community that has the skills and attitudes necessary to welcome and integrate newcomers, both socially and economically. To do this, the Facilitator takes the lead in building these competencies through creating, promoting and delivering cross-cultural training.

Core Position Responsibilities
The Facilitator's duties fall under three categories:

  1. Developing Community Connections and Partnerships
    Facilitation of workshops only happens once the connections and partnerships are formed with the organizations that need them. Therefore the Facilitator's primary role proactively establishing those relationships and promoting the benefits of the program. This involves:
    • Networking: Develop a networking strategy to promote and engage relevant stakeholders to participate in cross-cultural competency training and to actively recruit newcomers.
    • Promotion: Developing a promotional strategy that integrates social media, informational brochures and other materials necessary to promote the program.
    • Logistics: Negotiating and coordinating the pricing, logistics and details of the training delivery, as well as tracking all relevant administration.
  2. Facilitating Cross-Cultural Competency Training
    Having established these connections and gaining commitment to host Cross-Cultural Training (CCT), the Facilitator's other primary role involves taking the lead to deliver the workshops, examples of which include:
    • Recruitment: Developing approaches in successfully recruiting, retaining and promoting culturally-different workers.
    • Service Delivery: Supporting sectors such as community service providers, government departments, health care professionals, and private industry understand how to work across cultural barriers in successfully delivering their services.
    • Education: Creating inclusive schools and educational institutions by helping students, children and educators understand their roles in assisting newcomer students to succeed.
    • Internal: Assisting MAGMA staff, volunteers and clients to be successful in their interactions.
  3. Program Development and Enhancement
    There is an existing CCT program that is highly regarded and very successful, which currently has a team who develop new curricula and deliver workshops. However it is a cutting-edge approach that requires continual development, refinement and expansion. As such the Facilitator will work with the CCT team in order to:
    • Ensure a consistent delivery of workshops amongst the members of the team.
    • Tailoring delivery to the needs of individual organizations in terms of timing and content.
    • Work on new modules and approaches to ensure the training remains tailored, relevant and is regarded as an industry-standard for innovative approaches in the field.

Required Qualifications
The ideal candidate should possess the following:

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in a facilitation, networking, communications and/or public relations role, preferably in the community services or non-profit sector.
  • Languages: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and French are essential. Additional languages are a strong asset.
  • Presentation Skills: Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations and training workshops, including mentoring and cross-training others in these skills.
  • Networking Skills: Demonstrated ability to identify and connect with relevant strategic stakeholders in the business, political, educational and social development fields.

The Public Relations Officer should demonstrate the following:

Acts decisively and creatively when implementing solutions to ensure they are in alignment to the vision and values of MAGMA.

Core Staff Duties
The following core responsibilities are required of all MAGMA staff:

  • Event Participation: As a multicultural association which networks extensively with other organizations as well as hosting a wide variety of events, MAGMA staff are asked to be flexible in arranging to take part as these events usually take place outside of regular working hours. While each staff's role may involve specific activities, in general the staff are required to attend core events including the Annual General Meeting and the Mosaïq Multicultural Festival. Time spent at these events are taken in lieu, as arranged with the department manager.
  • Administration: As a government-funded organization we are required to report in detail on our activities. Staff are therefore required to submit a variety of regular reports on the fulfilment of their role requirements.
