Role Overview
The Mechanical Design Engineer will focus primarily on designing robust, efficient, and standards-compliant enclosures for dry-type transformers in both copper and aluminum configurations. Over time, the role will expand to support mechanical optimization across the plant, including tooling, process flow, cost reduction, and automation-readiness.
Key Responsibilities
Transformer Enclosure Design (Core Responsibility)
- Design sheet metal transformer enclosures from 15 to 1000 kVA (copper and aluminum units).
- Ensure designs comply with CSA, UL, NEMA, and other relevant standards.
- Develop detailed CAD models, drawings, and BOMs.
Optimize Manufacturing Processes & Tooling
- Design jigs, fixtures, and handling tools to improve assembly precision and reduce labor time.
- Streamline mechanical assembly processes (core clamping, coil-to-frame attachment, enclosure fit-up).
- Apply lean principles to reduce waste, modularize components, and improve ergonomics.
Support Thermal & Acoustic Performance
- Design airflow paths, louvers, or cooling ductwork to support thermal dissipation.
- Conduct basic simulations to evaluate heat and airflow.
- Implement noise mitigation strategies (dampening, acoustic paneling, vibration control).
Enhance Product Standardization and Modularity
- Create scalable, modular enclosure/frame designs for multiple transformer sizes.
- Develop standardized CAD libraries, templates, and BOM structures for reuse.
- Reduce SKU complexity and shorten quoting and production timelines.
Lead Cost Reduction Initiatives
- Identify alternative materials, fastening methods, and components to reduce cost.
- Redesign components for manufacturability to simplify welding or assembly.
- Support vendor sourcing for cost-effective mechanical parts.
Support Testing and Compliance
- Participate in mechanical testing (e.g., tilt, lift, impact, thermal).
- Ensure designs meet regulatory requirements and certification standards.
- Assist with troubleshooting test failures related to enclosure design and performance.
Documentation & Support
- Generate diagrams, lifting guides, and installation instructions.
- Produce BIM models or 3D files for customer-facing proposals and documentation.
- Provide support to technical sales on enclosure specifications and customization options.
Advance Future Automation & Plant Capability
- Assist in the design of carts, conveyors, or fixtures to aid future automation.
- Recommend layout and design changes to support plant efficiency and scalability.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 3+ years of mechanical design experience in a transformer manufacturing environment or similar environment.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar).
- Knowledge of sheet metal design, thermal management, and mechanical standards (CSA, UL, NEMA, IEC).
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
Preferred:
- Experience with dry-type transformers or power distribution equipment.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing and DFM principles.
- Exposure to FEA/CFD software for thermal and mechanical simulation.
- Experience with ERP systems and BOM structures.
