Position Summary:

Elizabeth Fry Societies across the Prairie region work to support Indigenous women, two-spirit, trans, and non-binary people who are currently incarcerated or returning home after incarceration.

As part of a collaboration between Elizabeth Fry Societies across the Prairie region, we are currently seeking a self-motivated and organized individual who carries deep respect for community-led knowledge to join our team to support re-integration and parole preparation for Indigenous women, trans, two-spirit, and non-binary individuals across the prairie region. The individual we hope to welcome to our team believes in the healing power of relationships, while also understanding that healing is not a linear process. The successful person can provide mentorship through their work, grounding their work in care, trust, and cultural humility. They are committed to walking alongside Indigenous peoples and families impacted by carceral systems by recognizing and respecting the wisdom of individuals and their families while maintaining space to carry the truth in their stories and advocating against barriers along their paths to healing. This position will be a one-year term position on a contract basis, with the possibility of extension to a three-year term.

Travel costs and arrangements will be covered by the host agency, as well as any necessary costs to obtain CPIC, criminal record, and abuse checks as required.

Regional Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will provide federal re-integration and parole preparation support to Indigenous women, trans, two-spirit, and non-binary individuals currently incarcerated in the prairie region, or those from the prairies who need support as they plan to return home. The successful individual will work collaboratively with Elizabeth Fry Societies across the prairie region and will provide support both in person and virtually to incarcerated relatives by:

  • Developing meaningful relationships that model trust, consistency, and compassion with the individuals you support;
  • Supporting Indigenous women, trans, two-spirit, and gender diverse people in federal prisons as they re-integrate into the community by helping them to identify and pursue pathways to healing that are guided by the needs and interests of the individual. This may include resource referrals (housing, addictions treatment, education or employment programs), connections to ceremony or spiritual communities of their choosing, and other community-specific supports (First Nation / Metis settlements) guided by the needs and interests of the individual requesting support;
  • Build and maintain respectful relationships with Parole Officers, Elders, CSC staff, Indigenous Liaison Officers, and others within institutions and the community;
  • Visiting institutions, healing lodges, community residential facilities (CRFs), and Section 81/84 residences;
  • Attend parole hearings and write letters of support that highlight the strengths and gifts of our relatives;
  • Maintain clear, respectful records to help us share the impact of this work including regional and funding reports

Skills, Experience, and Core Competencies:

The Federal Re-integration and Parole Support Worker is responsible for demonstrating, modelling, and socializing the following skills and experience through their work:

  • Experience and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and ways of knowing and being that are familiar to the Prairie region;
