  • Location: Markham, Ontario, Canada
  • Hybrid: These roles require the student to work full time (37.5 hours a week), in a hybrid work structure throughout the duration of the co-op/intern term.
  • Duration: 16-months, May 05, 2025 to August 27, 2026.

WHAT TEAM YOU WILL BE JOINING:

You will join the 3rd Party Analog Mixed Signal (AMS) IP Design Analysis and CAD team, which evaluates AMS circuit designs from 3rd party vendors, such as USB and PCIe blocks. The team ensures designs meet specifications, contractual requirements, and align with AMD's chip flows and design blocks.

We also build tools to improve design analysis, providing insight into chip methodologies and CAD workflows. Collaborating closely with internal teams and external vendors, we identify and resolve issues before silicon manufacturing, helping AMD stay on schedule and prevent revenue loss.

As part of this tight-knit team, you'll gain exposure to a range of circuit designs workflows, with strong mentorship and cross-training to foster collaboration and success. This role offers valuable experience in ASIC design, verification, and manufacturing.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

We are seeking a highly motivated Mixed Signal Circuit Design Analysis & CAD Intern/co-op to join our team. In this role you will be –

  • Understanding, analyzing electrical performance of hybrid Analog / Digital Mixed Signal designs implemented using deep sub micron CMOS technology, and then supporting integration of analog/digital design components into the overall chip system/AMD product.
  • Conduct research on the design to understand & highlight key issues, reviewing flagged issues, analyzing the problem, and then assessing if the design issue must be fixed.
  • Developing, investigating, and improving scripts and test cases to automate the IP design analysis workflow.
  • Working with 3rd party IP vendors to review and discuss analysis results for design fixes and improvements.
  • Work closely with engineers within Markham and other AMD design sites worldwide to enable solutions to these AMS designs.
  • Collaborating with AMD internal teams to cross-reference issues after design integration into the larger chip environment.
  • Use software automation to improve IP design analysis methodologies.
  • Use industry standard physical verification analysis tools to analyze hardware design components before final integration and preparation towards chip manufacture.

WHAT YOU WILL BE LEARNING:

  • The hardware chip development lifecycle from specification to silicon manufacturing.
  • Layout vs. schematic comparison (LVS), design rule checks (DRC/ERC), and circuit topological checks.
  • Schematics, layouts, and industry-standard manufacturing processes.
  • Key topics like electro-migration (EM), power supply analysis (IR), and electrostatic discharge (ESD).
  • Design for manufacturing and silicon reliability.
  • Static timing analysis (STA), SPICE simulation, and parasitic RC extraction.
  • Using EDA tools for analysis and verification at a conceptual level.
  • Revision control software and effective presentation of new workflows.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • 3rd year students in an Electrical or Computer Engineering Bachelor's degree program looking for a 16-month internship.
  • Possess strong hardware and software skills.
  • An understanding of analog and digital transistor device behavior.
  • Desire to develop well-structured and maintainable scripts using languages.
  • Implementing analysis automation using multiple programming/scripting languages such as C, C++ or Perl.
  • Research skills to conduct root cause analysis for software and hardware design bugs.
  • Basic experience in using command line interface with UNIX or Linux, scripting, HSPICE, Verilog or VHDL, and curiosity about transistor level circuits and/or layout.
