In Nova Scotia Long Term Care refers to Nursing Homes and Homes for the Aged. All Long Term Care facilities fall under the jurisdiction of the Homes for Special Care Act and Regulations. The Department of Health and Wellness annually inspects and licenses each facility and approves each facility's budget and per diem rate.

Some facilities provide other services, such as respite beds, adult day programs and outreach services. There are 70 Long Term Care facilities in Nova Scotia. Ownership is mixed with 22 Municipally owned, 21 private-non profit, 20 private-for-profit, and 7 based in hospitals.
