Our client is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in Canada and its customer base covers North American, European and Asian steel producers. Our client operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Îles (Quebec). It also operates a 418 kilometer railroad that links the mine to the port. Our client has approximately 2000 employees.
Fuel and energy accounts for more that 17% of our client's production costs and has been identified as a large final emitter of Green House Gases (GHGs) under the Federal Government's proposed Clean Air Act. In addition, our client also consumes a large volume of fresh water and processes several millions tonnes of benign tailings annually. Our client is seeking a capable individual to take over leadership of a small group responsible for overseeing a number of high profile energy and environmental projects from concept to implementation. This will provide individuals interested in this growing field a unique opportunity to share, grow and learn within world leader.
Reporting to the General Manager of Maintenance and Engineering, the ideal candidate will establish, champion and coordinate, in accordance with sustainable development principles, rolling 3 year operational improvement and investment programs/projects to:
- Reduce Fuel consumption and associated GHG emissions - the primary purpose of which will be to achieve in the most cost-effective manner minimum fuel consumption and a level of GHG emissions which meets or exceeds corporate and Government targets; and
- Conserve power and manage electrical energy load - the primary purpose of which will be to achieve a cost-effective reduction in electricity consumption and power consumption peaks; and
- Reduce Air Pollutants (AP) in the most cost-effective manner to meet or exceed Government and our client's targets; and
- Conserve water and optimize tailings management – the primary purpose of which will be to assure both short and long term tailings disposal.
The primary accountabilities of this role are to:
- Raise the level of awareness with our client on the need for fuel/GHG/air pollutant water reduction and power conservation and load management. Seek broad support for the associated objectives and means for their achievement working from within the overall Business Improvement umbrella, including Lean Manufacturing approaches. The Manager will periodically report on progress to the Lean Steering Committee
- Based on our client's existing state of knowledge, quickly move to seek and champion "quick win" opportunities in fuel/GHG/AP and water reductions and power conservation and load management
- Lead a small specialist team and external services and contractors to progressively build on "quick wins" by developing a more formal and structured approach to fuel/GHG/AP/Water reduction including

- Provide advice and support within the organization, e.g. in negotiations with Governments, Government agencies and power utilities, to proponents of projects which will impact fuel/power consumption and GHG emissions
Required Qualifications:
College/University Education:
- Bachelors Degree, preferably in an engineering discipline (process, chemical or mechanical engineering would likely be best fit). MBA or similar exposure with several years experience in developing and implementing energy conservation and environmental projects. All persons with applicable experience are encouraged to apply.
Other Qualifications:
- A record of strong demonstrated leadership and demonstrated achievement in a similar role would be highly regarded.
