Cytogenetics and Molecular Diagnostics Labs, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and appropriate Lab Medical, the Section Manager establishes and executes sectional objectives and action plans to support the strategic plan, collaborates effectively with other lab areas, departments, and programs on clinical issues, research and service provisions as appropriate.  The Section Manager leads the team in the provision of timely, quality services for the Cytogenetics Lab, providing analysis of chromosomal abnormalities for perinatal diagnosis and the investigation of genetic diseases; and the Molecular Diagnostic Lab, providing a local, regional, national and international testing service, for the diagnosis of genetic abnormalities and hereditary disease.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Leads Cytogenetics and Molecular labs through change associated with new initiatives, reorganized workflow and financial constraints; Works with laboratory specialists, staff and managers to implement a quality management system and achieve compliance with CSA and other standards, Ensures staff and other learners achieve competency and/or learning objectives; Manages human resources in compliance with collective agreements and follows up on employee relations issues appropriately; Plans and actively manages operating budget expenditures, interprets budget variances and adjusts resource allocations; Performs needs assessments, recommends and oversees acquisition of capital expenditures; Optimizes the use of resources to ensure section's indicators (quality, financial, productivity) are positive.

Qualifications:

  • Certification or Advanced Registered Technologist (ART) in Clinical Genetics or Subject RT in Cytogenetics or appropriate university degree (BSc, BHSc), and completion of, or commitment to complete, a formal management program

    or

    MSc, MHSA or MBA with in depth clinical knowledge in Genetics
  • Valid license, or exemption, from NSCMLT required.
  • Minimum three (3) years related leadership experience required.
  • Minimum three (3) years clinical laboratory experience required and commitment to additional technical training as required.
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership and team building skills required.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills (written and oral) required.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management skills and organizational skills required.
