Director, Animal Care Services (ACS)

Enable Health-Related Research.

Director, Animal Care Services (ACS)

Memorial University, Atlantic Canada's largest university, is building for the future.  We invite you to join us as the Director of Animal Care Services, enabling health research at Atlantic Canada's premier comprehensive university.

Reporting to the Vice President (Research), the Director of Animal Care Services oversees the operations of the three main locations across the St John's campus that makeup Animal Care Services. Providing solid leadership to a team across these locations, the Director is responsible for the health, wellness and welfare of the animals held at these facilities, and ensuring compliance with the standards set by the Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC).  The Director serves as the Executive Secretary of the Institutional Animal Care Committee, and as a member of relevant research committees and subcommittees - both internally at Memorial University and with affiliated institutions.  As a member of the Institutional Animal Care Committee, the Director also has responsibilities in the inspection of satellite locations where animal research takes place (i.e., the Ocean Sciences Center and Marine Institute in St. John's, and Sir Wilfred Grenfell College and Bonne Bay Marine Institute on the west coast of Newfoundland).

The Director is responsible for the educational programs provided by Animal Care Services for graduate and undergraduate students, technical staff, and others engaged in animal research.  The Director, together with the ACS Manager, is responsible for developing and managing the operating budget, and the management of human resources in Animal Care Services.

A licensed veterinarian with a Masters or PhD, you will have empathy for both animals and researchers alike as you oversee medical research, breeding and biotechnology facilities.  Keen to take advantage of the ability to purse continuing education in relevant areas, your related background gives you a solid foundation to enable research in the post secondary environment.  Your superior communication skills will give you the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders in the student body, faculty, and administration, as well as the broader research community.  A highly ethical individual, you've held senior leadership roles in laboratory animal science or are experienced in health-related disciplines and are ready to use your sound judgment and integrity to make effective and consistent decisions that will benefit both research and animal care at MUN.

If you are interested in applying for this position please contact Lloyd Powell in our St. John's office at 709.722.6848 or send your resume, quoting competition number HFX-MUN-4044-CB, to careers@kbrs.ca

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Memorial University is committed to employment equity and encourages applications from qualified women and men, visible minorities, aboriginal people, and persons with disabilities.
