Position Identification
Position Title:   Maritime Coordinator
Appointment:   60%, Grant Funded
Salary range:   Dependent on experience
Closing date:   August 31, 2008

Function
The Maritimes Coordinator is responsible for supporting Council Fellows and Early Child Development (ECD) Advisory Committees in the Maritimes in developing and supporting strategic ECD leadership networks.  The Community Coordinator will support the work of Maritime Fellows in interpreting and disseminating early child development research and information to community and government audiences; convening local and regional meetings; and managing intra Council communications and data.

Working Relationships
The Maritimes Coordinator has a line reporting responsibility (concerning financial and human resource issues) to the CECD National Lead Fellow (based in Vancouver), through their provincial CECD Fellows.  The Community Coordinator reports functionally (concerning implementation of local and regional action plans) on a regular basis to CECD strategic advisory committees in the Maritimes (which include participation of the Fellows).

Work Performed
The Community Coordinator supports the Maritime Fellows in developing a leadership role for the Council by:

  • Building and maintaining a database of ECD contacts and connections across the Maritimes;
  • Communicating with networks of community groups committed to building comprehensive early child development and parenting centres, based on the science of early child development, across the Maritimes;
  • Coordinating local and regional meetings and workshops as necessary;
  • Providing up-to-date information on ECD to municipal and provincial governments, business, and partners organizations on current research and the "state of children's development" using the EDI;
  • Coordinating, for the Maritime Fellows, logistics related to local, regional meetings and Summits as necessary;
  • Assisting with the development of strategies and tools for community mobilization and early child development planning (e.g. guides/toolkits, a monthly/quarterly e-mail newsletter, community summaries, policy briefs etc.);
  • Fielding inquiries from the public;
  • Disseminating provincial/regional reports and briefs on behalf of Maritime Fellows;
  • Coordinating with the national CECD office on financial management and reporting.

Working Conditions
The Community Coordinator will provide their own independent office space.  A CECD dedicated laptop computer and appropriate software will be provided if necessary.  They will be reimbursed, within a preapproved budget, for all out-of-pocket expenses incurred while working for CECD Fellow and Strategic Advisory Committees in the Maritimes.  The position requires some travel within the Maritimes and occasionally within Canada.

Minimum Qualifications & Skills

The successful candidate will have a commitment to and understanding of promoting the healthy early development of children.
 
Education
Degree in a relevant field.

Experience
A minimum of 5 years related experience.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain administrative and organizational systems
  • Experience with coordination of community networks
  • Experience in meeting and event coordination
  • Communications and public relations capability
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development theories and research
  • Knowledge of best practice in early child development programs and policies
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Capability with standard computer software applications (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe)
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivation and ability to work well with minimal supervision
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail
  • Bi-lingualism an asset
