Police Recruit Training Program

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is currently inviting applications from women and men interested in a career as a Police Officer.

Duties & Responsibilities of a Police Constable Includes:

  • Enforces the Criminal Code of Canada and other Federal legislation, provincial and municipal legislation; and presents evidence in court. 
  • Responds to calls for service, provides support for victims, and mediates disputes.
  • Conducts criminal investigations. 
  • Develops and/or executes operational plans.
  • Works with community stakeholders.
  • Presents a professional public image at all times.

Applicant Requirements

  • 19 years of age upon completion of the academic portion of the Diploma in Police Studies with Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN).
  • High School graduate or have Mature Student Status (according to MUN).
  • Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant Status.
  • Meet physical requirements and RNC Vision Standards and have no medical conditions that would impair the performance of police duties.
  • Must be a graduate of a degree from a recognized university, or have completed 15 credit hours in university level courses preferably in English (2 courses), Psychology (2 courses) and Sociology (1 course).  These academic requirements are outlined on the MUN website.
  • Meet academic qualifications as stipulated by MUN for entrance to the University and be eligible for admission to the Diploma in Police Studies at MUN.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Have no criminal convictions or findings of guilt and/or have no criminal charges pending before the courts.
  • Have no undetected criminal activity.
  • Be of high moral and ethical character and be capable of projecting a positive police role model to the community.

If applicants meet the above requirements, a fully completed application package must be forwarded to the RNC when there is a call for applications.  Applicants must clearly demonstrate that they meet all of the requirements.  Failure to do so may result in an applicant being screened out of the competition. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is committed to gender and cultural diversity in the workplace and will be actively seeking applications from identifiable groups.

Selection Process

  1. Screening
  2. Physical test (Physical Abilities Requirements Evaluation)
  3. Interviews with a Selection Board
  4. Polygraph examination
  5. In-depth Reference checking and criminal records check through police/court data banks and other sources.
  6. Medical and Psychological assessment
  7. MUN screening process – conducted by MUN

Applicants must be successful in each stage, before they can proceed to the next stage of the competition.  All costs associated with the process are the responsibility of the applicant. 

Successful candidates enroll in the Diploma in Police Studies at MUN, which begins each September.  This program consists of two academic semesters followed by a practical training semester at the RNC in St. John's.  Participants are required to pay tuition fees for all three semesters.  During the third semester, cadets receive approximately $15.00/hour.  Upon successful completion of this program, candidates are eligible for employment at the RNC.  Successful completion includes a post-training Physical Abilities Requirements Evaluation and a final interview.

Locations

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is headquartered in St. John's with detachments in Corner Brook, Labrador City/Wabush and Churchill Falls.  Police Officers can be assigned to any of these locations depending on operational requirements or to any other locations that, in the future, may be within the jurisdiction of the RNC.
