The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is currently recruiting for the following position in Labrador City:

Matron & Jailer

Temporary – On Call

Duties:

This is general duty custodial work protecting and guarding of prisoners at police headquarters. This work involves supervising prisoners so that security of the inmates and the facility is maintained: performs security checks and searches of cells; conducts frisk as well as strip searches of prisoners upon admission or where required; distributes meals and other supplies to prisoners; cleans cells and prepares linens for laundry. The incumbent will be expected to intervene in prisoner disputes by applying non-violent crisis intervention techniques; apply reasonable force in restraining inmates when necessary for personal safety or protecting public property; conduct remand prisoner escorts to other correctional facilities, medical clinics, etc.; ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations by reporting violations and give evidence at disciplinary hearings when required; and conduct daily health inspections ensuring compliance with prevailing health standards. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications:

Candidates must be 19 years of age and possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence. Candidates should possess knowledge of attitudes and behaviour patterns of persons under restraint, institutional security methods and operations, and prisoner control / restraint techniques. Effective communication, interpersonal and self management skills are required. Candidates must also be readily available to work flexible hours. The related qualifications for this position would normally be acquired through graduation from high school and experience working in the security field. Equivalencies may be considered. The competition for the Matron positions is open female applicants. The competition for the Jailer positions is open to male applicants.

Salary: $26,408.20 - $28,519.40 (GS-19)

Plus Labrador Benefits Package:
Labrador Allowance: with dependent $4,950; without $2,475.
Travel Allowance: $750 for employee and $550 per dependent
