Duties:  This position is responsible for securing the compliance of commercial vehicles, ambulances, passenger vehicles and their operators with the legislation and standards governing the construction, maintenance, weights and dimensions and operation of these vehicles; and the handling, offering for transport and transportation of dangerous goods through on road enforcement of the Highway Traffic Act, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and the Motor Carrier Act; operates portable weigh scales, as required, and conducts roadside weighing of commercial vehicles to ensure compliance with load weight restrictions and issues required citations or tickets; conducts inspection of authorized inspection facilities to ensure compliance with the Highway Traffic Act Official Inspection Station Regulations; conducts investigations into complaints within the related field; reviews carriers respecting vehicle and driver record keeping requirements; on request, assists police in accident investigations by conduction mechanical inspections and preparing technical reports; Issues violation tickets and/or initiates prosecutions; travel is required; performs related duties, as required.

Qualifications:  Considerable (3 – 5 years) experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic; some experience or formal training in enforcement and investigation work; possession of an interprovincial journeyperson certificate as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, as issued by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  The successful candidate must also possess strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills together with the ability to work independently and demonstrate good judgment.   Must possess a valid driver's licence and have a five year period free from suspension for impaired driving.

Salary:  MS-32 $21.13 – 23.49 per hour
