Position Title: Business Development Specialist
Position Overview:
The Business Development Specialist (BDS) is accountable for driving our client’s growth strategy by working with a designated group of brokers across all brands in the personal lines business to execute strategic and tactical plans. They will not have any commercial lines responsibilities other than IRCA (Individually Rated Commercial Auto).
Reporting directly to the Business Development Manager (BDM), this role will also have a close working relationship to the Account Executive. The primary contact in the broker office is the CSR’s and producers.
The BDS provides the gateway to our client by acting as a dedicated point of contact and “go-to” person. The BDS works with front-line broker staff to make doing business with our client easier by providing: advice and guidance to CSRs on products, portal and technology; marketing support; analytics, metrics and reporting to monitor performance.
- This role is accountable for building and maintaining solid relationships with CSR’s in the broker offices in order to help them maintain existing business and develop new business. The BDS will manage these relationships through regular contact with the CSR’s to gather information around needs and opportunities for growth, share these with the AR and BDM to identify solutions, and bring those solutions back to the broker office. The BDS will provide front-line first aid to the CSR to facilitate doing business with the client.
- The BDS will support broker toolkit-related activities such as broker training, campaign initiatives, etc. The BDS will leverage its knowledge of the broker office and other competitive intelligence and share the information with the AE around potential broker additions in territory and potential portfolio acquisitions.
- The BDS will work closely with the Account Executive in developing and monitoring broker business plans with our client, by leveraging intelligence gained through their relationships with CSRs. They will also be accountable for communicating the plans back to the CSR’s after they have been agreed to by the broker principal.
- This role is accountable for conducting monthly reviews of broker performance against the business plan and participating with the rest of the business development team in the quarterly broker reviews.
- Developing, executing and monitoring marketing activities, product promotions, campaign marketing, etc. The BDS is responsible for leveraging intelligence gained through the CSR relationships in addition to other competitive intelligence as they work with the Account Executive to identify, develop, monitor and execute personal lines campaigns for new and existing products and services. The BDS will have some discretion over co-operative marketing campaign funding for brokers.
- Conduct Personal Lines training, including: product, technology (eg. portal), policies and processes. The BDS is responsible for ensuring CSR’s are well versed with relevant products, technologies, policies and processes that facilitate ease of doing business with our client. This includes communicating relevant changes, introducing new products, training delivery, responding to questions and conducting follow up activities to ensure CSR’s have learned the material and can apply it in their business activities. In addition they will be responsible for monitoring CSR activities/adoption rates to determine if training is required (new or re-training).
- Supporting underwriting-related and administrative activities to support broker management. This role is responsible for facilitating activities through the provision of limited override of exception underwriting within specified limits and identifying portfolio transfer opportunities. In addition, the BDS will develop rehab plans where necessary and facilitating audit activities.
- This role is also responsible for updating the business plans to reflect changes (eg, campaigns, products), coordinating the necessary activities to conduct portfolio transfers and adding new brokers to the recordkeeping systems.
Required Education & Experience:
- Undergraduate degree or College Diploma
- Enrolment in/completion of insurance industry courses (CIP).
- 5 years related experience, preferably within the property and casualty insurance industry
- Marketing experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of insurance processes
- Detail oriented
- Solid computer and technology skills
- Ability to transfer knowledge
