Human Resource Consultant

The primary emphasis of this position is to advise leaders and managers in the management of people, through coaching and interpretation and application of HR policies and programs. The HR Consultant is expected to build and maintain relationships with business managers of people, gain an understanding of the people issues and consult with business managers to provide solutions.

The HR Consultant will engage with the Senior Leaders to understand the people plans and strategies for an area and will become involved in the delivery of strategic initiatives and core HR programs to enable the overall business strategy for the group.

The role of HR Consultant has 5 key areas of responsibilities:

  1. Delivery of core HR programs. Facilitate/lead the communication and delivery of programs to managers.  Core HR programs include: Performance Planning, Management Development, Development Planning, Succession Planning, Employee Engagement, Education of managers on HR programs and Role & Competency profiling. Health & Wellness (Safety), Payroll & Benefits.
  2. Coaching Managers and employee relations matters – Advise and coach managers of people on interpretation, application, and adaptation of HR programs, policies and procedures for resolving people issues.  Mediate or counsel managers on issues arising between managers and employees. Redirect employees to appropriate sources of information on HR programs.  Educate and interpret HR policies and procedures for managers. Escalate issues to Senior Leaders or to appropriate resolution, when additional expertise is required.
  3. Diagnose unique people issues in specific areas and recommend existing solutions or involve the appropriate resources in the research and creation of possible solutions. Engage HR Administrator to address management information needs (analyze, interpret data and present information to respond to management issues).
  4. Execution of Employee Learning & Growth initiatives – Working with the Team Leads to understand the people plans, initiatives and delivery of strategic HR initiatives.

Required Skill Set:

  • Extensive previous HR Generalist experience.
  • Post-secondary education in Human Resource Management or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and government employment standards and legislation.
  • Relationship building.
  • Business planning.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Coaching experience.
  • Priority setting.
  • Problem solving.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical thinking.
  • Business acumen.
  • Facilitation.
  • Professional HR designation e.g. CHRP a definite asset.
