Nova Scotia Power (NSPI) has been producing and delivering electricity to Nova Scotians for over 80 years.  Today, NSPI's more than 1700 employees are responsible for supplying over 95% of the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical power to 478,000 customers in the Nova Scotia. The company is focused on new technologies to enhance customer service and reliability, manage costs and improve efficiency, reduce emissions and add renewable energy.

We are currently inviting applications for the position of Senior Human Resource Consultant in Sydney, NS.  Reporting to the Manager, HR Client Services, you will play a role in the development and implementation of strategic Human Resources plans and the provision of HR support to our internal clients. You will work in conjunction with other HR team members to provide expertise and hands-on support in a broad range of human resource management functions including:

  • Implementing the HR strategy in support of business goals
  • Providing advice and coaching to business leaders
  • Proactively assisting with talent management needs
  • Recruiting and selecting for key roles
  • Building and maintaining relationships with employees at all levels
  • Employment legislation interpretation and education
  • Challenging current assumptions with the goal of continuous improvement
  • Assisting with employee performance issues
  • Assisting with workforce and succession planning
  • Policy interpretation and education
  • Assisting with Employee Relations Issues
  • Communication and delivery of HR programs and initiatives
  • Mentoring HR Associates

The following qualifications are essential:

  • Must be an experienced Human Resource professional with 7-10 years experience in increasingly complex Human Resource roles
  • University degree in a related field or a diploma in Human Resources
  • Prior HR experience in a unionized environment
  • Experienced in areas such as such as the Labour Code, Human Rights Act, EI Act, Workers Compensation Board etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), problem-solving, analytical, time-management and decision-making skills
  • Strong work ethic, a high respect for confidentiality and sound professional judgment and initiative
  • Effective team player, able to work across the organization to get things done
  • Maintains high levels of confidentiality
  • Willing to support team members at all levels, pitching in wherever necessary no matter what level the task
  • Valid NS Driver's License as travel will be required

These additional qualifications would be considered an asset:

  • Proficiency in the MS Office Suite of software (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook Express), MS Internet Explorer and technical skills using a Human Resource Information System, preferably PeopleSoft
  • CHRP designation.
