Controller

Our client, the Powell Group of Companies, is looking for a Controller.  With headquarters in Bay Roberts, NL (approximately one hour from the provincial capital of St. John's), the group consists of a large wholesale company, 3 supermarkets outlets, a beef processing plant, 2 restaurants and a bakery.  Reporting to the vice president, this position will provide leadership to the finance department and the company as a whole.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Supervise and assist in the daily operations of the finance department including the recruiting, training and evaluation of departmental staff
• Produce monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP and other management reports for each company. Analysis of same including the comparison of actual to budgeted values
• Maintain and develop internal control policies and practices
• Other duties as required

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

• Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.  Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems.  Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
• Work requires professional written/verbal communications and interpersonal skills, ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings and the ability to adapt to new systems.
• These qualifications are normally acquired through a combination of the completion of a Degree in Business and 5 – 10 years of experience in a senior accounting position. Similar education and work experience will be considered. An accounting designation is desirable but not required.
