The Department of Justice is recruiting qualified and interested candidates for the following employment opportunity:
Youth Care Counsellor (Casual, On-call)
Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Centre, Whitbourne
Duties: This is a professional counselling, direct care and custodial work within a designated Secure Custody and Remand Youth Corrections Facility. Employees of this class are all responsible for: planning, organizing and directing the implementation and control of all rehabilitative programs and activities for residents during an assigned shift; consulting with other professional and line staff; participating in case planning process; performing counselling and intervention practices; interviewing offenders upon admissions; conducting shift-by-shift security checks of all resident living areas and facility grounds, personal security searches, curfew checks and applying mechanical restraints in accordance with Security Risk Classification System. Work involves establishing and maintaining acceptable standards of social and behavioural conduct and rehabilitation; supervising, controlling and guiding residents on acceptable standards; maintaining appropriate relationships; applying approved custodial, rehabilitative, developmental treatment and recreational plans; and acceptable standards of direct care for adolescents. Work is performed independently within established policies and procedures and is reviewed by senior staff (such as the Manager of Services and Operations) through discussions, review of reports and analysis of results obtained.
Qualifications: Candidates must be experienced in working with adolescents, preferably in a residential setting of Youth Offenders, and possess a valid Class IV driver’s licence. Graduation from an approved college or university with major course work in the social sciences or related field supplemented by required in-service training courses (such as First Aid, CPR, etc.) is required. Equivalencies may be considered.
Salary: $38,114.46 - $42,324.66 (HS 30)
