Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the permanent position of Civic Events Coordinator. The Civic Events Coordinator is responsible for developing, planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating primarily outdoor special events and related projects of significant scale. The Coordinator works under the supervision of the Senior Civic Events Coordinator.

The Civic Events Coordinator delivers quality service to internal and external clients, visitors and residents of HRM. The individual must be self-motivated, dependable, and able to work well with others in a fast-paced, customer-service oriented environment. The work location is 2nd Floor, Alderney Gate, Dartmouth.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides expert advice in the area of event management;
  • Leads, facilitates and executes a variety of community events at varying scale, type and locations;
  • Assists with the coordination municipal components of community and special events annually throughout all of HRM;
  • Effectively coordinates, plans, promotes, implements, and evaluates some of the civic events and festivals that are deemed the sole responsibility of HRM;
  • Assists with the establishment and maintenance of partnerships with external groups in order to enhance ongoing and new events;
  • Conducts on-site logistical work at certain events, implements some events in their entirety, and coordinates elements of some events;
  • Liaises with local groups, supporting agencies, governmental agencies and other organizations;
  • Actively facilitates and seeks out sources of support for community events;
  • Maintains communications to create an ongoing presence for civic events within HRM;
  • Manages specific events budget, including budget preparation, forecasting, analysis, cost recovery, and revenue;
  • Secures corporate sponsorships to enhance event programming and developing comprehensive sponsorship campaigns;
  • Applies financial risk management controls

Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in Recreation Management, Public Relations or related discipline or an acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • At least three years experience in progressive event management or coordination managing primarily outdoor events of significant scale, with demonstrated performance capabilities, is required.
  • Expertise in management of event logistics.

Job Specific Knowledge/Technical Skills

  • Working knowledge of the event planning cycle and principles of risk management
  • Knowledge of municipal government and the services provided by Community Development and HRM
  • Knowledge of community development principles and models/approaches
  • An understanding of the entertainment and production business an asset
  • Some knowledge of budgeting and financial management
  • Familiarity with a wide variety of software including word processing, spreadsheet packages, SAP, Internet, and GroupWise

**The Selection process will include an Interview and a Presentation.

Hours Of Work: Normal hours of work are 8:30 - 4:30 Monday thru Friday, however evening and weekend work is required. Generally, it is a 70 hour biweekly flexible work schedule.

Salary: $27.55 per hour as per NSUPE13 Collective Agreement (Probationary and Temporary employees may be compensated at 90% of this rate.)
