Position:  Paralegal
Type:       Permanent, Full-time

Three sole practitioners require the services of a paralegal for their law office.  This is a general practice with an emphasis on property law and family law.

The position involves a wide range of responsibilities encompassing the overall operation and organization of the office.  This position calls for a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, initiative, attention to detail and independence.  The successful candidate will be flexible, credible, discreet and possess well-balanced judgment. 

Key elements of the role include:

  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities, with an emphasis on superior grammatical skills.
  • Ability to establish priorities on the basis of relative importance and urgency and be able to control the flow of work.  This will, in turn, require effective communication and cooperation with co-workers.
  • Use of PC Law for the daily management and monthly reconciliation of trust and general accounts.

Credentials:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience in the use of WordPerfect and Microsoft Word and their related spreadsheets.
  • The professionalism necessary for direct client contact as well as for contact with other law offices and associated businesses. 
  • Experience in the use of PC Law for the daily management and monthly reconciliation of trust and general accounts.
  • Experience in the preparation of all documents required for real estate transactions:  purchases, sales, remortgaging, including deeds, mortgages, statements of adjustments, affidavits and powers of attorney.
  • Experience in preparation of reporting letters to clients and financial institutions as well as requests for tax certificates, mortgage payout and assumption statements.
  • The ability to work effectively on the Property On-Line system.
  • Experience in the use of DivorceMate software for the preparation of financial statements including the calculation of spousal support proposals.
  • Experience in drafting and preparation of all documents necessary for the initiation and prosecution of all matters before the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia – Family Division.

These qualifications would normally be acquired through graduation from a recognized program in paralegal administration, supplemented by several years of related professional employment experience.
