Chemistry

Job Summary: The Glassblower is responsible for the operation of the Glassblowing Shop in the Department of Chemistry. S/he is required to have independent judgment in designing, constructing, modifying and repairing apparatus and equipment used for teaching and research purposes. Interpret scientific drawings and oral/ written proposals in order to produce required apparatus. Develop an estimate on costs for each project undertaken. Demonstrate competence in the technical skills of scientific glassblowing, including cutting, heating, bending, shaping and sealing.  Assist faculty, post doctorate and graduate students with design of complex scientific glass equipment and evaluate applications and fabrication techniques to determine feasibility. Review and analyze glass engineering and research data to meet research objectives. Maintain inventory and billing records. Monitor projects to meet completion dates.  Order glass, oxygen and hydrogen supplies. Establish and ensure adherence to safety standards in the workshop. Maintain shop equipment, update operating manuals, calibrate and monitor high vacuum systems and annealing ovens. The position reports to the Administrator, Department of Chemistry.

Qualifications/Experience: A diploma in Scientific Glassblowing is required. Extensive experience of over 10 years, preferably in a research environment, is essential.  Incumbent must have proficient hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity.  Ability to effectively communicate with researchers to design and fabricate glass apparatus is required. Must be able to work independently with minimal direct supervision.

Salary Range: $48,585 - $59,250 (32.5 hours/week)
